S/O why are online degrees useless?

I agree with you. I teach online for UMUC. The work load is much harder than a traditional classroom setting. Most of the learning falls to the student. There is no face to face opportunity where a student can say...I just don't understand and I'm so lost that I can't even begin to articulate what I don't understand. Many of my students comment that they wish they had taken the class in person. So many people think it's going to be easier and then are disappointed to learn how much work and effort it really is.

I'm glad you posted, because I have one qualm about a degree that's all online. Would there be any opportunity for networking? For people who are changing careers, making connections is important.

In my classes, there really isn't. There are no face to face meetings. Most of my students are located around the world. I don't know if the university does any sort of networking events at the shady grove campus or the one in PG county.

community college credits over to UMUC. I checked and it is a credited school. I'm about to invest a lot of money in going to school there - will it be for nothing?

Lesson 1: Accredited school not credited.

They would still have to do hands on clinical.

What about online executive MBAs? Are those worth the money? I found a reputable school with an executive MBA program that is $45K a year but I can get my MBA in 2 years

Feel better about yourself now?

An Executive MBA program is accelerated. Why would it take 2 years? That is the time for a traditional MBA.

OP, do your homework, make phone calls. No way would I let someone from DCUM be the ultimate authority on online programs.

Also, some online programs allow you to 'sit in' on a class if you are unsure. One of my online classes required skype which I hated even though it was once a week. I always had to look presentable versus my other class which only required a headset allowing me to sit at my computer in my tattered robe and Beatles coffee mug.

Make sure and check out the format for whatever classes you will take.

Good luck!!

This thread is sad. The purpose of education should be to master the subject- not to get a job. But perhaps you enjoy the system as it is- paying through the nose for little value.

And you know this how? Tell us about your practical experience, not what you've read in the funny papers.

He has so much reading, every other day he has post comments then comment on 2 other people's comments and do weekly assignments. It is way more time commitment than a brick and mortar school class.

Right

So basically they teach themselves.

So what good are you?

You're a nothing behind a screen.

I call bullshit.

You don't get the present and future contacts and friends who help you get jobs and opportunities. It's about the interaction with people, not the degree.

Are you really asking this question in 2013?

Wow, you are dumb. I bet you have at least 2 degrees.

This may apply to someone who is just getting out of school but many online advance degree candidates are already established and working towards advancement in their own companies so to speak. And it is about the degree. Interaction with movers and shakers is worthless without it.

And you, my dear, are an idiot. I bet you have a GED.
