Recruited College Athletes from Big-3 Type Schools?

Are there any area lacrosse camps which you would recommend to a middle schooler who may be in the recruitable category?

1. The longtime coaches in the area have great ties to schools, not just Division I but NESCAC schools. If your son is already at a school talk to the coach about what might be a good fit.
2. Lacrosse recruiting at the Division I level is, unfortunately, now happening earlier and earlier, with kids committing their sophomore years. The Ivies may be waiting a bit more, until the early fall of junior year, but they too may be moving up to compete with other schools. A lot of the college coaches hate it -- the error rate is much higher -- but they feel they have to do it to compete (there was a recent NYTimes article about this).
3. Given the early timing, the center of gravity for recruiting has shifted in a big way to clubs and showcase tournaments (e.g. during the fall of the sophomore year). You should be able to talk to your school's coach or to other families to find out more about the club experience.
4. As stated, there are almost no full scholarships in Division I lacrosse because of the small number of scholarships and big rosters. If, on the other hand, the lacrosse angle is more about getting help with admissions to a competitive place, or just playing out the sport at the highest level, that's fine. You need to be realistic that there probably won't be a lot of money in it.

Some of the best tips I've come across. Thanks!

Do the schools play at the showcase tournaments? Or are those only for club teams?

depends on the school. Publics and smaller programs like Maret or Sidwell might not participate as a school team.

Here's a li nk to a tournament at Georgetown and you can see some teans are schools and others are stuff like Madlax:

Included is a list of college's attending.

This is a summer team camp. The fall showcases don't work the same way.

Hmmm, it looks like LAX is going the way of soccer - another sport where you pay big bucks and spend days traveling to tournaments, all for a miniscule chance of being recruited. Is that true?

Of course, doing sports and belonging to a team are good for other reasons.

the chances for being recruited for lacrosse are much better than soccer

I would say basically yes, but also agree that currently there are still more opportunities in lacrosse -- enough so that chances of being recruited are still decent (but shrinking as the size of the lax player pool increases year by year).

the best soccer players aren't playing for their schools any more because clubs are barring them from high school team play.

Are lacrosse players from public schools not usually recruited?

the vast majority of players will be seen by college coaches during the summer for their club teams. It is better to play for a decent HS team, but the majority of the coaches will see you at summer tournaments and recruiting camps.

New to DC. When you say "club team," is that the same as "travel" team. Or does the lax scene in DC not include a travel component?
