Another school day of video games

Teacher here. I would love it if they got rid of Chromebooks. Kids are learning a lot less in ES than before Chromebooks were introduced

Actually my kid says at his school, the kids get 30-45 mins a day of playing “educational” games while the teacher is reading with groups so no, it is NOT just the older grades. I went on a field trip with my niece from McNair ES and when we were walking through the school saw May kids on Chromebooks at their desks in groups.

This may be during FIT time? I believe schools are supposed to regroup kids by level during FIT time so they can get support or enrichment, but this does not seem to be enforced by MCPS, so instead a lot of schools just leave kids in their regular classroom for FIT time and the classroom teacher often just sticks whoever she's not working with on Chromebooks.

My 2nd grader got brand new chromebook this year. Browsing history reveals consistent use of games during class that are presented as educational. There is nothing further from the truth. Depends on teacher. Guess is that younger Gen Z teachers use chromebooks more as a pacifying tool to control behaviors. Others may likely not use at all. MCPS does not have rules and cannot track and enforce chromebook use.

That's been the experience at our ES too. It's part of the reason I wish MCPS would approach reading instruction a bit differently- I know tracking has gone out of favor but my oldest DC went to a (non-MCPS) school where within the grade, kids were allocated to appropriate phonics/reading groups based on their level. So rather than one classroom teacher having to teach multiple ability groups within their classroom, they each taught one group for a longer block. Sometimes DC would move to a differnt classroom with a different teacher for phonics/reading. They'd re-evaluate progress and sometimes move kids every couple months or so. Seemed like a much more efficient use of time and there was less down time to fill with playing games.

Are you able to implement this in your class by not using Chromebooks, or are there reasons you feel you have to?
