How did Bowdoin acceptance rate become so low?

It's one of only 10 colleges that are need-blind for international students, so a lot of needy kids throw their hat in the ring, likely not realizing they have a 1.4% chance of acceptance.

Why are Bates and Middlebury so poor in comparison? Didn’t both fire their prior Presidents? Netflix guy must be giving big bucks to Bowdoin.

And honestly? I find the premise mostly false. You’re “need-blind” but you heavily restrict international applications, and still obviously take internationals from the best high schools in their country (aka Rich students). It’d be like saying your need blind and then mostly taking students from private boarding schools in Massachusetts.

Um, because they are not the same caliber as WASP-B?

I don’t think that’s entirely true though. Amherst has the same policy and my DC there knows a number of international students on full aid.

It is a fictional creation created by someone who is posting on this thread pretending to be several different posters. Same Shit Different Day.

You are not reading this thread if you think it is a fictional creation. Bowdoin belongs with WASP — and no other SLACs do. Endowment, yield, admit rate - everything. If you want to make an actual, rational argument why it does not belong, please do so. Oh, wait! You can’t…

Bowdoin parent here. The obsession over the acronym is so dumb. Please stop.

What acronym? You mean WASP-B? Or are you, justifiably, objecting to WASP? Don’t be a self-hating Polar Bear; global warming is enough for us to cope with.

Middlebury is at $1.7B, and Bates at $500M. Hardly poor.

Bates at 239k per student is in trouble. Not in terms of closing or anything, but it will have to give lots of merit aid soon, and that starts a vicious feedback loop. Ask Conn College. Midd will have to start doing the same a decade or so later (at most).

Good assessment it’s applicant cannabilization among Middlebury, Colby and Bates for the leftovers. Merit aid usually means school is in trouble.

Bates mostly suffers from a lagging endowment. Its location is mid, but most lacs aren’t in the best locations so whatever. Middlebury…meh, it’s in a pretty good place and is recovering after the deficit issues. Less students are choosing to apply for whatever reason. US news ranking drop probably had some effect.

Spot on. Kids and their parents realize Midd has slipped on several fronts. Not much hope for Bates.
