Maybe a VAPA kid can write a musical about MVC. |
What makes Northwood program better? |
Some of the talented theater kids could have taken MVC instead of Statistics if it were offered. Some of them are very bright. |
No, it’s not her and stop naming people when you don’t know. Why do you have to be so nasty. It’s pretty horrible you keep doing this. Why would you? My kids are on this track and it’s an issue. I know at least a few families worked it out with by going to other schools. Unlike that family I cannot drive them as I work. |
And, you don’t make Einstein a kind and welcoming school when you treat other families like that. You make Einstein look bad. |
DP here. For gods sakes, maybe we have higher standards for our kids' STEM education than simply being able to graduate high school. My kid is an engineering major. Being able to go to Wheaton instead of Einstein and therefore take MVC and engineering classes and all the Physics AP classes has been tremendously helpful to him in classes. My older kid went to Einstein and has struggled in his college STEM classes. It sucks. I wish we had sent him to Wheaton instead. And if my super smart at STEM younger son had had to go to Einstein, that would not have been a good option for him. I'm glad we got out of MCPS before they took away the DCC choice process. |
What elementary and middle school are your kids at that accelerated them enough for this to be an issue? I ask because I’m not aware of any in the cluster that do. Maybe Takoma magnet? |
| You parents flipping out about MVC are nuts. I'm not delighted about eliminating the DCC but it is what it is. There will still be choice options for your child to go to a STEM magnet and enhancing the science offerings at Einstein could well lead to MVC being offered in future years if there are class fulls of students on that track. That said, your kids must be young because you don't have to drive them to MC. By the time they are taking it, they can drive themselves. |
The regional model didn’t set a STEM program at Einstein, did it? Why Einstein will necessarily get higher level offering in the future? Previously STEM-strong kids in Einstein can choose Wheaton engineering or Blair SMCS, and now they can only choose Blair SMCS, so I can understand why that MVC parent was so irritated. However, Blair SMCS will be less competitive in the future, so hopefully the STEM-strong kids in region 1 will have an easier leeway in the future. |
The principal could add it but chooses not to. One of the VPs does not support ap classes so it’s hard to say if it’s the principal, or this one ap or both. They have at least two qualified teachers with degrees. |
It depends on the kids birthday as it’s no longer 16, but 16.5 and it assumes you can provide a car and they get parking at Einstein. Proving a strong course offering makes Einstein a better school. There are only limited spots in the magnets so not all kids get in. Mcps should provide transportation, not the parents if the expectation is to go to MC. A car is what $2-3k in insurance, plus gas and parking on top of the car. That could easily be $20-30k just to take 1-2 classes at MC. You are better off paying privately for classes but MCPS will not accept them. |
The new model has a critera-based biomedical science program at Einstein. |
And, it’s not just about MVC but lack of other classes as well. Your kids may not have needed or wanted them but to strengthen the school isn’t it important to have enough diversity in classes for all students and not just yours. Parents fought for basics like music theory and were told it wasn’t in the budget. For a school specializing in the arts, that’s a very basic course offering. A lot of kids go into the arts in college. |
The latest proposal puts a biomedical program at Einstein https://go.boarddocs.com/mabe/mcpsmd/Board.nsf/files/DMJHXR4AA9BD/$file/Boundary%20Studies%20Program%20Analysis%20Update%20251016%20PPT%20REV.pdf But who knows since they keep changing things reactively to respond to the people who scream the loudest |
