I remember when Rock Creek was a lake and mommy bosses and the proletariat were fish.

Cool "Disco" Dan

When Bethesda Metro station opened, we were told that the escalator was the longest in the free world

I know someone already said the Whitman Dome, but sitting up there at night looking at the stars

Lots of good ones have already been said

Also, remember that line at the Hot Shops Cafeteria in Wheaton? Man, that was a wait but the roast beef and mashed potatoes were worth it. Also, remember the creepy bathroom down the stairs in the basement?

Remember the firemen's parade in Wheaton? It always ended up in Wheaton Plaza?

Loved the petting zoo at Wheaton Regional. I remember getting bit by a duck. And the train (which is still there). But when we were little everyone would scream their heads off when it went through the tunnel. And the playground. All those awesome metal pieces of equipment with bolts and some were at least 2 stories high. There was that one really tall thing and you would climb a ladder straight up through a tunnel and there were like 5 slides to get back down. God forbid someone slipped in that thing because it would take like 10 kids out at once. The rock hard ground covered in gravel? If you fell your parents had to pick gravel out of your knees.

YES!! And there was like a 2-story tall curly slide (metal, of course). I remember being so proud of myself once I got up the courage to go down the thing. And I wish the petting farm was still there for my little ones now.

Loved the huge Gifford's in Silver Spring (now a daycare center).

How about playing in the fountain at Woodside Park? That was like the original Silver Spring fountain ... and does anyone remember how they used to pipe water through the fake "silver spring" in Acorn Park?

The McDonald's in Silver Spring had a neat indoor play area with plastic life-size figures of Ronald, Grimace, the Hamburglar and the Fry Guys.

And what about Captain Andy's Rivertown in Wheaton - it was a knockoff Chuck E. Cheese.

My whole childhood is rushing back! Great thread!

105.9 classic rock
105.1 WAVA
B106
99.1 WHFS and the HFStival...before it was at RFK

When the Redskins played at RFK

When Reagan was shot

When there was no Potomac Mills and only rednecks lived in Woodbridge

When a trip to Springfield Mall was not akin to a trip to Afghanistan wearing clothing made of American flag material

There were no Starbucks

Before Nordstrom

Before the VRE and before the green line was finished -- I can remember my father tracing the dotted line on the map and saying, "See the green line? This goes through the poorest parts of the city...the people who need good public transportation the most...and it is the last part to be finished. That's wrong." To.this.day.

Everyone wondering...would ANYONE go to the MCI Center since it is in such a bad part of town

Farrell's

Dart Drug

People's Drug

The Bayou

*Sigh of happy memories*

The lines were awful, and if you went to gas up with your parents, it was basically considered a day trip b/c it took that long to get oil and head home.

Anonymous wrote:Any one remember the oil crisis? showing my age but i would wait in line half a day to fill the tank for my parents. you could only get it filled every other day (odds and evens).

Not being able to sell your house in Bethesda for rhyme or reason -- no one was interested in living there! My parents had to offer an assumable mortgage to sell their house on Rosedale Avenue in 1980.
