| Half day during preservice week seemed to work fine. This seems overkill |
| Are students who are not going into a new school planning to attend tomorrow transisition day? Is it OK for them to go to school even if they are not entering their first year in elementary, middle or high school or a new student at a school? |
No, it is only for new students at a school. There will not be any classes or programming for them if they are not new. If you drop them off they will have to spend the day sitting in the library or something or shadowing a new student. |

Let’s clear up a few things from this thread:
Transition day tomorrow is for students new to any school. Mostly this will be school entry years K,6,9, and 3rd at a couple schools that split. Yes, there will be some other new kids in other grades and they too are encouraged to attend. No, students not new do not need to go to school. It’s the last free day for them before school begins. No the transition day does not count as part of required number of days. Thank MSDE for that. Every school is planning their own day. There will be some things similar like tour of school, meeting teachers, etc. Will before or after school care be provided? Ask your childcare provider. Will his transportation be available? Yes, buses will run on their normal schedule from their normal location. Check the bus schedule to find out where you should be and when. Will lunch be served? Yes or your bring a lunch from home. |

At our two ES (K-2 and 3-5) they said that only those in the entering grades should come - anyone new to the school in a higher grade should not come. The messaging is completely bizarre. Central office says one thing and the ES are saying another. |
Yes, our ES has been very clear it’s just for K. They haven’t even addressed the discrepancy in messaging from central office. |
And sending additional communications doesn't help. Send the correct and consistent message!!! |
Luxmanor says this about Transition Day: "At Luxmanor ES this day will be for our Kindergarten students only. It is a good day for them to try out their school routine and get prepared before all students return to school. We are hopeful that our new students (1st-5th grade) will take advantage of our other welcome back opportunities to acclimate to Luxmanor. This includes the new family parent information night as well as our open house." |

Looking at the activities planned for our sixth graders, a full day seems an reasonable amount of time. We have both academic and socioemotional rotations, plus a block with lunch and physical activities. And every staff member has a role so there’s no inequity in workload between grades. |
The 9th grade teachers have sacrificed a half day of preservice for years in order to orient students. You can do this. |
| Do 9th graders need to full-on bring their backpacks and everything? Or just, say, a couple pens and a folder to stick things in that they get over the course of the day? |
Backpack so they can sort of experience the damn load they will endure on their backs for the next four years. It's different than middle school. They can also stick their lunch in the bag and keep papers and other stuff. |
As an elementary teacher in another school, this frustrates me as we are expected to welcome all new students. We don’t get a bonus day to plan/get ready. Just one more way the teachers in “rich” schools get more breaks. |
