Law enforcement will now receive Social Security when they retire. That’s a wonderful development. Now their golden years will include Social Security, a pension, and a (457b)deferred compensation plan. Hopefully the younger generation will also take the new overtime tax credit and invest at least $7,000 in an additional Roth IRA. A rookie officer in 2025 could easily retire with investments that allow for a better lifestyle than they enjoyed while working. |

The job market for recent grads is currently horrible and most likely will deteriorate even further for the class of 2026. It amazes me that students aren’t looking towards law enforcement more frequently. Per the ZipRecruiter annual grad report linked below the average salary for recent grads is $68.4k while the expectation of current seniors is a starting salary of $101.5k. They even highlight the high law enforcement salary recent grads are getting, ranking higher than CS and Engineering.

People shouldn’t underestimate the value to law enforcement the new tax deduction for overtime offers. For the young and single officers $12,500 is the maximum deduction. For married officers filing jointly it’s $25,000. |
My niece is a law enforcement officer in NoVA. Year to date she’s had 3 pay bumps that total almost 20%. She and her husband are doing very well. She never gets less than a 5% raise every year. Her organization is currently enjoying an influx of money that allows for new equipment and vehicles. It’s like the local government has gone all in on RE-funding the police. I’m happy she has a well paying and stable job when everyone else seems to be getting laid off. |
The potential for growth is much higher for most engineering majors in the 10+ years following. Also, most engineering majors I know make $80K+ starting out |

If your purpose is chasing status, acceptance and a wonderfully curated social media presence then law enforcement isn’t for you.
If you want to serve your community and try to make a difference there are opportunities for you to do quite well in law enforcement. It’s a demanding job. Most people here couldn’t handle it. |
Starting salaries for engineers in this area are $80-$90k+ depending on the industry and type of engineering. We are starting our new grads in the spring at $110k. These are computer sci/related majors. |
I wouldn’t recommend computer science to anyone right now. |
