It’s a better package than most engineering majors get fresh out of college. When you factor in overtime it’s not even close.

Starting salaries for engineers in this area are $80-$90k+ depending on the industry and type of engineering. We are starting our new grads in the spring at $110k. These are computer sci/related majors.

In 5 years those jobs will at least partially be replaced by AI. That’s going to save your company a considerable amount of money, and they’ll make that transition with zero consideration of the thousands of graduating CS students.

Police won’t start at $110,000 anywhere but CA, but they also won’t be replaced by AI.

Are there white collar jobs that offer a pension?

Those same local and state jobs except they are in an office...

Parents here would have a stroke if their heirs went into the public sector.

How would you rate the long term security of your child’s career?

I saw this in another section of DCUM. In FY24 the 10 highest paid Baltimore employees were all members of the fire department or the police department.

The article linked below is from last September, when the job market was much better than it is currently.

“Americans may be finding it a little tougher to land a job these days, but not so much in one field in which salaries are climbing fast and employers are offering robust perks.”

“The average salary of a police officer climbed more than 37% in the first eight months of this year compared to the same time last year, according to ZipRecruiter data provided to CNN. That’s a recent sign of strong demand for police officers, because from 2022 to 2023 the average salary for policing jobs rose by roughly 8%.”

So overblown. The average cop sits on their ass all day and their career highlight is pulling someone out of a car crash once or twice.

A lot of butt hurt office workers feeling some real jealousy. It’s supply and demand. They want the very best applying to join the police. Engineers are plentiful.

I wish this was the case but those days are over. Policing today is much more dynamic than 20 years ago. Sure there’s down time, just less than there used to be.

Police Chief in another jurisdiction, or Sheriff.

Why not start another pension for yourself, maintain medical coverage, and work more normal hours as you get older?

Same. I'm a 120# female. I'd need to gain another 50# to hold my own.

You can become a school resource officer or "community engagement officer". You don't have to be a beat cop.

But, yea, I'm 5' so there' s no way I'd pass the physical test. LOL

I looked up the highest starting law enforcement salary within the greater D.C. area and was surprised to learn that it’s the SCOTUS Police Department. I had no clue they had their own police. For the 5’ tall PP something like this might be a good fit. I read that many of these officers make $200k+ with overtime. They also offer a massive $50k hiring bonus.

$50,000 hiring bonus:

$20,000 after completion of training
$15,000 after one year
$15,000 after two years

Salary:

$83,362 – Entry-level
$91,848 – After 30 months (Private First Class)
$142,513 – Maximum base salary at the Private First Class rank
$149,638 – Maximum base salary at the Corporal/Technician rank
$160,664 – Maximum base salary at the Sergeant rank

This was recently posted on the college forums. So interesting. My son is in junior year of college but has always been interested in FD and PD. I told him about the above info.
I know a few college grads that are now applying for sheriff, court officers, etc in my NJ area.

Yes. But after 5 years an engineer will be at 90k and more without overtime.

without getting shot or punched

My nephew has 4 years on the job. He’s never been punched. He’s never been shot. He works 7 days(10 hour shifts) every 2 weeks. His salary in $93,000. Last month he did 8 hours of training each week on days off. That was just under $2,500 in overtime for training alone. When he goes to court he gets overtime. It seem like every time he blinks he gets overtime. All in he makes $150,000+ at 26. He doesn’t worry about AI. He has no fear of being downsized. He’s investing a lot of money. He loves what he does and doesn’t consider it work because he loves what he does. He can’t imagine being an automaton in a cubicle farm staring at a screen all day.

Thank you to your nephew.
