Thanks! It’s ridiculous that they would have the last day be a half-day on a Monday. They should move the transition day to the week before so it ends on Friday.

I disagree. I prefer to have a nice full last week of summer without a transition day. I think they are basically expecting that no one will attend on that last half day on the Monday. Obviously no learning happens on the last day, it’s not a great loss.

Yes, they really should move the transition day to the week before. That would make the last day of school Thursday, June 18, 2026. Friday is the Juneteenth holiday.

Agree. The transition day is optional -- and it's worked to have it be before the start of school for students.

Did you complete ROUND 2 of MCPS Traditional Calendar 2025-2026 Survey?

-your role/relationship to mcps
-race/ethnicity
-where you live
-which forms of communication would be helpful in order to ensure students, staff, and families are aware of Student Transition Day (August 25, 2025)
-what considerations for we still need to provide clarity on as we move forward with the early planning stages for student transition day 2025-2026?

Draft A 8 day winter break, last day of school June 17
Draft B 10 day winter break, last day of school June 22

-which draft calendar do you prefer based on winter break?
-which draft calendar do you prefer based on last day for students?

At the policy committee meeting, the SMOB rightfully pointed out that the survey results show very strong preferences for both a 10-day winter break AND an earlier last day of school, but they have not developed a draft that includes both of these. They should either develop one and adopt it, or if they're not willing to do that, then they should redo the survey to ask people which one option do they prefer: a longer winter break OR an earlier last day of school.

That's exactly what I was thiniking when taking the survey.

I was thinking that, too. So silly.

I wrote something about that in the fill in the blank comments session at the end of the survey

We should shift summer break so we start the school year earlier and end earlier, but still get a longer winter break.

I don't think starting school two weeks before Labor Day would be very popular here.

It definitely was not when they tried to do it a few years ago. Turns out it was never implemented because it was in the Hogan, no school before Labor Day, times.

The thing that is making the calendar harder is the addition of the cultural holidays. Before they changed that policy, they could start the Monday before Labor Day, end around June 15 and include 183 instructional days.

For the life of me, I can’t figure out why not.

August is vacation time in the DMV.

Is there some particular reason for that, besides that we usually don’t start school earlier in August? Is it particularly advantageous for feds to vacation in August or something?

I understand that people already have August 2025 vacations planned, but if MCPS saturated the public with notices for the next 21 months that beginning in 2026 we’d start school 2 weeks before Labor Day and then we’d get out of school a week earlier in June of 2027, people could plan accordingly.
