However, I think all the pay to play will ultimately help us get some good players in 10 - 20 years. The fact that all these kids are very interested in playing soccer and convincing their parents to pay $3k a year to play for a mediocre "travel" team with a mediocre coach (often unlicensed) is a win. The more kids are out there kicking the ball, the better. We have to be optimistic.

Freddy Adu had great potential but his mother messed him up. He did not allowed him to go to Europe. But anyway, that is a different story.

Freddy lying about his age his entire career messed him up. Nobody to blame but himself.

When did he lie about his age?

No 8 year old kid lies about his age. I actually saw Freddy's papers when he was 14. It checked out on the surface. If they weren't accurate, that's on the parents - not the kid. The issue is with the adults. Some kids mature quicker than others. That's why we have to stop promoting big kids with mediocre skills. Freddy was a decent sized early teen with great skills. It's on the adults for pushing him too fast and, to his own admission, himself for letting it go to his head and not doing the necessary work. There also were some "handlers" who really steered him wrong.
