Well played. |

my rising senior is trying to decide between (1) women's studies; (2) sociology and (3) undecided or American Studies or Anthropology.
Is there any benefit to any of these majors (as a strategy) at T50 schools? Female. top rated non-DMV private HS. High grades/stats and ECs that relate to women's studies and sociology, along with some national recognition. Unclear about what her strategy should be. OP - thoughts or weigh in? |
I’d apply where she wants to go. Though some top schools don’t have majors (just minors) available in these fields. So that’s something to look at. It probably would distinguish her more if she were a boy. |
| The smartest person I know majored in this at UChicago because she wanted a 4.0 to apply to law school. |
When she graduates, she can ponder the mystery of the gender wage gap, where women earn 77% of men. It must be the patriarchy. |
Accurate. Thanks for putting this into words. |
Touché |
It mighy be a "meaningful inquiry" but that's all. We are talking about an entire major, four tears if focus and then hurdles into getting that first job. Not a smart choice. |
Found this thread. Very helpful. I have a junior who has some girl mentoring ECs and female focused volunteer efforts. She is thinking about Women's studies and Communications or Women's studies and Sociology. Which schools did your senior decide on? Curious about what types of ECs and Awards you have to show major alignment or if that is still needed? Thanks |
| this thread is CRAAAZY |
Ha! |
That is because men dominated medicine, design and engineering. If you want to change these things, you need to go into those fields, not sit around writing papers whining about how unfair it is. |
Yowza. You have demonstrated decisively that you have no familiarity with how either of these interdisciplinary areas of study evolved. It's nothing like a "fascinating car crash"--the idea that no one talks or has talked about what they each bring to the table (and fail to) is laughable. Transphobes are booed at both conferences, though, so you're unlikely to be happy at either. |
