No, Mr. Tanner is a song by Harry Chapin and tells the story of a singer from Dayton, OH who sang. His friends and neighbors thought he was great and he should sing professionally, so he spent all of his life savings to book a hall in NYC and sang a concert. The critics panned him and he came home to Dayton and never sang in public again, only to himself when he was alone. John Wallace was a band member for Harry Chapin and had an incredible range. He sang the baritone role of Mr. Tanner (as well as the falsetto tenor in Taxi). Carl Tanner was a real singer who has the back story that you describe. He was a truck driver who attended a conservatory for classical music but decided to be a truck driver for a few years. After a driver near him heard him sing, she told him he should be a professional singer and he decided to give it a try. |
