O Holy Night

You should listen to Harry Chapin's song "Mr. Tanner" O Holy Night is a background to that, but Mr. Tanner has made O Holy Night so much more poignant for me because of the story. It makes O Holy Night so much more emotional for me (and the goosebump feeling) knowing the story of Mr. Tanner as well as for the beauty of O Holy Night.

Is this the guy who used to be a truck driver before he came out and became an international opera star? I heard him sing O Holy Night at the Kennedy Center (DC was in the chorus behind him) and it was absolutely amazing.

No, Mr. Tanner is a song by Harry Chapin and tells the story of a singer from Dayton, OH who sang. His friends and neighbors thought he was great and he should sing professionally, so he spent all of his life savings to book a hall in NYC and sang a concert. The critics panned him and he came home to Dayton and never sang in public again, only to himself when he was alone.

John Wallace was a band member for Harry Chapin and had an incredible range. He sang the baritone role of Mr. Tanner (as well as the falsetto tenor in Taxi).

Carl Tanner was a real singer who has the back story that you describe. He was a truck driver who attended a conservatory for classical music but decided to be a truck driver for a few years. After a driver near him heard him sing, she told him he should be a professional singer and he decided to give it a try.

Interesting thing about “Daydreaming” is the reversed and manipulated lyrics in the end.
