Where do the people in the $6/7/8m+ mansions in send their kids?

Sidwell costs the same as the other Big 3, so that’s sortof a silly distinction. And basically the same as all the other non-Catholic schools in that cohort (Landon, Holton, Potomac, Maret, GDS, etc.). I’d bet my life that no full pay family has ever decided between these schools based on the negligible tuition differences.

And, these other schools have the same recruited athlete phenomenon, so I don’t think that you can conclude that therefore The Richest DC Families Go To Sidwell.

I’m very curious about your statement that the financial aid is going to recruited athletes at Sidwell. That assumption — and I’m guessing that you don’t actually know — strikes me as a really bad one. I mean, maybe for basketball? But, athletes tend to already be semi-rich kids. Look at the families spending $$$ on private lessons, expensive travel clubs, hotels and airfare all over the country. These are not the poor chickens at our school.

You clearly don’t like Sidwell, but that’s not my problem. You also shouldn’t allow your opinions and emotions to interfere with facts.

“Sidwell costs the same as the other Big 3…”

2023-24 Tuition:
St. Albans (Day School): $55,468
Sidwell: (Grades 9-12): $55,140
NCS: $53,210
GDS (Grades 9-11): $51,325
It is also a FACT that no other “Big 3” provides less need based financial aid than Sidwell (NCS ties Sidwell at 21%).

“Other schools have the same recruited athlete phenomenon…”

Really? Which athletic state championships have GDS, STA and NCS won within the past 5 years? How many of their athletic teams have been NATIONALLY ranked within the past 5 years? How many professional athletes have those schools produced?

“I’m very curious about your statement that the financial aid is going to recruited athletes at Sidwell.”

First, I didn’t say ONLY recruited athletes receive financial aid. My (non-recruited athlete) daughter plays two varsity sports at Sidwell. She’s friends/acquaintances with many athletes across multiple sports. There are only a handful of new recruited athletes for most of Sidwell’s sports each year…and students talk. My daughter has been told, DIRECTLY, by several sports recruits (across multiple sports), that they’re receiving financial aid. I guess those students don’t think it’s some sort of shameful secret, as you clearly do.

This was by far the weirdest comeback post of all time. You strangely made the original poster’s point for them. As if any rich person would choose NCS over Sidwell to save $2,200.

The athlete fight is also totally weird. I’m sure we’ll hear from all the STA folks about their famous athletes and Landon and whomever else. Listen, the idea that Sidwell is some sort of athletic powerhouse like the catholic school —ok, ok basketball—is just not what most people think about your school.

And I had really been impressed with the Sidwell grads I knew in person but this post reminds me that there are dumbbells everywhere.

1. In your desperate haste to try to prove me wrong, you missed the entire point. My point is that Sidwell provides the lowest percentage of need based financial aid, among peer institutions (tied with NCS). That means that nearly 80% of families are full pay—one of the highest percentages among DC area private schools.

2. Landon and area Catholic schools are not Sidwell’s academic (or overall) peers. My comments only apply to GDS, STA, and NCS. I’m open to learning about the athletic accomplishments of these institutions, so prove me wrong or move along.

3. Sticks and stones.

St. Albans. Marriott Hall named after them.

Isn’t there a Marriott Hall at Bullis, too?

There's also a Marriott library at Holton (currently under renovation.. I assume the name will stay?)

This. We were attending a game at Holton and noticed this and found it interesting that their HS daughter chose SR instead of Holton.

So Sidwell families are the richest because Sidwell gives the least aid? Is anyone convinced by this? My gut is that the richer schools give MORE aid because they can afford to? Plus, the differences you are talking about are pretty small.

NP. Sidwell is also a powerhouse in tennis. Specifically, girls tennis. This year, both the JV and Varsity girls tennis teams are undefeated.

This is from Sidwell’s website:

“The girls' varsity tennis team has become one of the top programs in the ISL AA Division, winning back-to-back-to-back regular season and tournament banners in 2019, 2021, and 2022. The team also won DCSAA DC State Titles in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023. Over the last four seasons, the team has compiled an overall record of 50-1 and has been ranked in the Top 5 in the High School National Team Rankings by Universal Tennis (UTR).”

Some of you really struggle with reading comprehension. The discussion is not about which schools are richer, it’s about which private school families are richer, overall.
I would say the school that charges one of the highest tuitions in the DMV, but has the fewest families receiving need based financial aid is definitely in the running—if not the leader of the pack.

Are people really trying to debate the overall wealth of Sidwell families?!? Envy causes people to say bizarre things.

You can't just look at the % receiving aid. A school could give a nominal amount to all families and then report that they give aid to 100% of families. What matters is how much money they give. If a school gives full aid to 10% and half aid to another 10%, that is far more impactful to those 20% than if they took that same money and spread it out. If you really want financial diversity, you need to be willing to give some families 100% support.

Many Sidwell kids I know are super nerds and lack social graces...harsh but a reality.

My Sidwell US children say they often encounter other students’ petty, jealous comments (like the one above). They also don’t care. Heavy is the head that wears the crown.

The initial commented that started the debate argued that Sidwell families were richest of the DMV private schools set because tuition was highest, financial aid lowest, and stellar athletics(?) (unsure of the last points relation to the predicate but you’d have to reread thread to untangle their logic).

You’ve convinced need me that Sidwell really does have the richest families because the tuition of $55k (as opposed to $51k) is meaningfully different to rich people, the rich Sidwell families can’t share their very richness with poor people in the form of aid, and those rich Sidwell people can afford the very best athletes with the itty little bit of aid they bother to share.

So I guess they are royalty!

Except the Prince of Denmark turned down Sidwell for his kids

STA has extraordinary levels of wealth but also 40%+ of students on aid. They have the most generous financial aid in the DMV and a very high financial aid cut-off.

This is 100% correct. The school has need-blind admissions. And if they take an applicant, they will find aid.
