If you read the previous message they clearly said the name tags were for an elementary. There are numerous magnets all over the county and your child is only eligible for a certain percentage. You can't possibly have seen them all so your skepticism is misplaced.
We've seen folders laid out too for a smaller magnet and one bigger magnet had folders in bins that teachers handed out. I do think they left them out during the presentation so that families who were late could grab their folders and that no one was supervising that part so I believe that in flipping through their part of the alphabet looking for your folder you could have seen other names. Did your kid go to a magnet MS? The kids were all talking about it instantly, in person on chat, when the results came out. Whole thread about how distressing it was. |
Our daughter did the Eastern magnet and when she returned to our home high school several of the parents I knew from elementary school told me at back to school night “my child didn’t bother applying because they didn’t want to go” (this was after they switched to a non-application process). I just smiled and nodded every time a parent told me their child didn’t go to the magnet, not because they weren’t offered a spot but because they couldn’t be bothered.
Parents really do tend to latch onto narratives that make themselves feel good about their own kids vis-a-vis others. |
OMG, this thread is getting really out of hand. I think the point is that the PP who said that "everyone who was in the Eastern magnet lottery got offered a spot" is probably wrong unless they work for DCCAPS and they know for a fact this is true. Many of us know families who were in the lottery but did not get a spot. Just because you and your friend group experience something, doesn't mean that something is universally true. This shouldn't need to be said.... |
There are no elementary magnets so that person was clearly talking about 5th graders going in to middle school magnet open houses. Yes, I have had two kids in middle school magnets and their experience isn’t how you described. But my kids aren’t braggy and didn’t want to offend anyone who didn’t get in. Even in CES the kids were unaware of uninterested in the magnet process - it just want something they were following. I was surprised - I asked both kids when they got in, did anyone talk about it at school today and they both said no (different years). |
Probably confusing it with the high school process. |
I've had two kids at Eastern. The training in writing, public speaking, and film making is fantastic. I'm so glad I sent them. They're both better writers in high school for having attended Eastern. The work load is higher, but not awful. One of my kids is sort of average motivation and she did fine. |
PP .. if not for Eastern what would have been your home middle school. And how you would have liked it compared to Eastern ? |
It’s been two days. What did you decide, OP, and are you at peace with your decision? |
OP here. We decided to go to Eastern and it's all good so far. After orientation DC came home and said they were excited for the year. They are happy with the decision and seem to be making friends and reconnecting with old friends. They said the teachers are really nice even if some are going to require a lot of work. Hoping it continues to be a good experience. Thanks for all the input! |
Again, there are no elementary magnets. |
The MCPS website lists the elementary CES program under the Magnet Programs heading, so they certainly seem to think there are. Not sure what nit you’re picking here. |
No one calls CES magnet. |
What? Yes they do. It’s a magnet program (it pulls kids from different schools). |
Different poster. No, no they do not. Plus, Eastern didn’t hand out folders. |
Are people still getting off waitlists for Eastern/Takoma? |
