Is Hawaii "worth it" from the east coast?

Barbados has not t been mentioned as a safe Caribbean destination. I agree with the comments about Jamaica outside the all-inclusives. It’s unfortunate.

The fires are heartbreaking. I was just going to plan our one in a lifetime trip there for next summer. Now I don’t know.

This trip was planned and canceled because of covid. Twice. What a bummer

Old Lahaina is essentially gone. So devastating! We live in CA, so HI for us is easy to get to. We've spent a lot of time in West Maui, with daily trips to Lahaina. It's just so sad to think of all those people losing everything! And for the town to burn so quickly that people had to escape into the ocean! It will take a long time for that side of the island to recover it's tourist base. And for the locals to regain what they've lost, if ever.

I am the PP who was just there. They are still waiting for daylight to asses the damage better but I am reading in the comments on CWG that the Banyan Tree and Pioneer Inn are gone.

That is really sad. If the fires don’t run south to the hotels on the tourist strip, I think the tourist industry will rebound pretty quickly though. People go for the beaches and the road to Hana and the bike ride down the volcano — all of which should still be there. Staffing the hotels will be challenging as I think most of the locals live in the areas that are being hard hit. Hopefully the hotel industry will be supportive of rebuilding housing for working class folk.

Which island did you visit?

The turtles, the hiking, the dolphins and whales, the volcanoes, the food, the waterfalls, the drive to Mauna Kea, the night sky and stars at the top of Mauna Kea, the sunsets, the surfing, scuba diving and hearing whales calling to each other, the luau, the black sand beaches, the culture, etc. I had a whale breech the water next to me on a SUP in Hawaii. Hawaii is far but it is truly unique and special. It is a very different experience than the Caribbean.

+1000

Very different than anything in the Caribbean. Been to all the islands multiple times (been to Hawaii at least 25 times) and love them all, each has different things to offer.
