Favorite foods that have disappeared

Fat Frog ice cream bars
Mickey Mouse and friends ice pops

My mom used to get these weight watchers desserts that were a strawberry cheesecake. You heated it in the microwave for 30 seconds. They are probably terrible but I’d love to have one just to relive the nostalgia.

My grandmother would take me to one as a kid where she lived in Brooklyn and I’d get belly lox on a bialy and she’d get a tongue sandwich (never tried it but I’ll admit it smelled good). We would then split a black and white cookie down the middle. I liked vanilla and she liked chocolate so it was perfect. A lot of them have closed as tastes have changed and younger generations don’t want to take them over. Who’s eating tongue, borscht, matzo ball soup, derma, stuffed cabbages, kugel etc anymore.

Jews eat these things still of course. There aren’t good delis in the DC area but they’re alive and well in NYC.

Omg yes. The black and white cookies in this area have universally been terribly disappointing

Perhaps a regional thing, grew up in Midwest. But the Kmart stores used to have a cafeteria inside. They had these warm apple dumplings that they would serve covered in some warm vanilla custard like sauce. It was divine- at least to 10 yr old me.

The entenman ones from the grocery store are surprisingly good. Mostly when I get the bakery ones around here I think “I should have just gotten the entenmans “

Campbell’s souper combos. They were these microwaveable meals that was a small cup of soup and a sandwich. My grandmother would buy me the cream of broccoli and ham and cheese croissant one. So good!

These all sound disgusting.

In any case, as a teenager my favorite ice cream was Ben and Jerry’s White Russian. I’ve missed it for at least 25 years and have never found a similar flavor.

But if they brought it back my 50-year-old tastebuds would likely find it too sweet.

Sara Lee pecan coffee cake
Pepperidge Farm Coconut cake with Lemon filing
Cragmont grapefruit soda
Great Escape frozen dinners. My favorite was the one with beef short ribs. Seafood Newberg was good too
Smoked sable tails from Posin’s

+1 on the Sara Lee coffee cake!

The coffee cake exists, I cook one every Christmas morning, but they are getting harder to find. My husband had to go to 4 different stores til he finally found it at a Harris Teeter.
