Oh, Maryland, what happened to you?

What a lame post. I don’t get these MD vs VA posts. I’ve seen plenty of horrible VA drivers. And people on their phones? Oh sure, that doesn’t happen anywhere else. Please.

This. I’m from MoCo and whenever I have to go to NoVa I’m struck by how terribly ugly it is.

But your flag is ugly

Eh - I like Maryland. If this encourages more people to stay away then it stays nicer for me.

My parents finally left Maryland a few years ago and we don’t go back often. I traveled to Bethesda and Rockville yesterday for the first time in about a year. What struck me the most:

-panhandlers at every side of all the major intersections. I’m shocked Montgomery county allows that.

-why on earth did they take 1/3 of a major artery (Old Georgetown Road) and close it off for bike traffic? Want to know how may bicyclists I saw using that section of the road? Exactly zero.

-I almost hit two pedestrians in two completely different areas who stepped in front of my car in the middle of the block when they were looking at their phones. Neither of them ever seemed to even notice I was there.

-I also almost got hit four separate times by people either pulling into traffic from the side streets without caring if it was clear, or realizing they wanted to turn at the next intersection when they were several lanes over.

Is it entitlement? Or do people in Maryland just tend to have their heads up their rears? I couldn’t figure it out but the vibe there is so different than it was when I was growing up there (in the 70’s and 80’s) and so different from Virginia. How do people stomach living there these days?

Yeah I’m sure all of this happened in your one day in Maryland.

I live in Rockville and frequent Bethesda and the surrounding areas. Today on Rockville Pike was the first time I have seen a panhandler in a while.

Just curious. My post highlighted the OP’s claim that he almost got into 6 accidents in one day in Maryland (obviously a troll). Why are you quoting my post and then talking about seeing panhandlers. No one disputes seeing panhandlers but do you really think the OP almost had 6 accidents?

Virginia posters inferiority complex and obsessive lashing out is troubling.

Np, the reason it's so bizarrely weird is because it's state-based inferiority. I can only imagine how these individuals treat people that they view as superior. Your constant swatting and attempts to goad Marylanders into state fights while they mostly ignore you is a dead giveaway that you feel less than. Meanwhile, Marylanders view you as a housefly-- mildly irritating but for the most part, ignorable.

Guys: Utopia does not exist. No where is perfect. Both are good states with different strengths and weaknesses. I like living in Md but also like Va and DC for different reasons. We are blessed to have so much variety and good choices in DMV. #BetterTogether

Which is it better to live in Virginia or Maryland?
If you prefer more of a quieter bedroom community with less sprawl, Maryland is probably better. If you prefer more of a job center with more sprawl as a result, Virginia is probably better.Jul 27, 2022

Maryland is among those considered the most snobby. In fact, our state ranked 13th on the list. But Neighboring Virginia made it into the top 10 for snob factor.Apr 21, 2021

People are nuts if they don't think there aren't tons of confederate flags in MD. My SIL has a beautiful home on the water on Cobb Island. I was there taking in the view of it along with the confederate flags. I'm sure this isn't the case in PG and Montgomery counties. Just like it isn't in Fairfax, alexandria, arlington and even prince william. You have to get pretty far out in VA to start seeing those flags. Rural VA and MD have a lot in common.

+1

Had family living in a small town in rural Carroll County and a Confederate flag flew near an old silo as you approached the town. I think the folks who live in the inner MD suburbs either forget or are ignorant about how "red" rural MD is.

The whole point of the ugly Maryland flag (which I actually love btw) looking the way that it does is that the state is half-Union half-Confederate, as far as allegiances of the people go anyway. This dynamic still very much exists.

DP - I also love the Maryland flag. And, yes, rural MD is very red, as is rural VA. One of the big differences (to me) is the overall proportions in the states - Maryland is much more balanced geographically and far more blue when it comes to population. Virginia has very blue areas in NoVA, balanced out by how large the rest of the state is. It ends up being purple because of the population disparities in NoVA vs. the rest of the state. So, you wouldn’t see someone like Youngkin elected in Maryland, where he was in Virginia. That stuff does end up mattering, at least to me.

Large swaths of VA is considered the Bible Belt.

And the stroke belt (as in high incidence of strokes)
