People want a longer summer break/getting out earlier in June because they really don’t learn a lot or do a lot after Memorial Day anyway so all that time just feels wasted.

This is a big part of it for sure. And why my child is "sick" a lot in that period of time. DC can be home doing other things or sitting around in school. The "last day of school" counting toward those hours they have to be in school, is 2 hours of kids sitting around in he Aux Gym. Even the teachers were encouraging the kids to stay home. It's a joke.

Total joke. That’s why people want longer summers because anything scheduled after exams is no school at all but yet they count it towards the legal requirement. People need to wake up and vote the SB out.

So are you advocating for 165 days of school or for an early August start date? Personally, I would not mind starting on 31 July or 7 August and getting out just before or after Memorial Day weekend.

For the life of me I do not understand why people are so insistent on that long summer break. Learning loss is a big problem. Summer is hot and miserable after a while. My ES kids get sick of camps and my older kids that are too old for camp but aren’t old enough to work are bored. We even travel for a good 3.5 weeks and it’s still too long.

My kid does summer swim and then has to report at the start of Aug for her HS extracurricular summer practices. Taking that 3rd week of June as vacation is our best bet to get away w/o missing more critical weeks of the swim team season OR conflicting with the can't-miss HS activity dates in August.

That's just me but it's my answer to why I don't want them going longer than 2 weeks in June.

Everything after May is just busy work. Getting ready for school and dropping off/picking up from school is a pain for actual learning. The calendar needs to be more succinct and get rid of all the random days off. This is why some areas have done year 'round schooling, but those places also have better infrastructure for childcare and camps which we refuse to implement here. Don't give me the summer learning loss garbage when the kids barely have a full week of school from start to January.

It’s not about the long summer break for me, it’s about the fact that, mentally, there’s an attitude shift and mental break after Memorial Day in May that makes the rest of the school year just killing time and busy work. The sooner we get out after Memorial Day the better. I would be fine with starting much earlier in August.

I’m advocating for no breaks other than federal holidays, winter break, thanksgiving and spring break.

I was so frustrated by this survey. It was just "We are adding professional development days, when do you want them?"

Of course lesson plans change from year-to-year as needs change. Additionally, teachers must plan differentiated lessons for a minimum of four different groups.

Planning time is also grading time and data analysis time.

Planning time is also time for IEP meetings, 504 meetings, child studies, local screenings, and parent conferences.

Teachers get paid for 195 days. Do you want them to spend those 16 weeks you propose they plan, UNPAID?

Correct. The post above says that planning time (so during school hours) is used for IEP meetings, 504 meetings, child studies, local screenings, and parent conferences. It doesn't say anything about meetings being outside school hours.
