If there’s a surge, you may not have a bus driver and your kid may be sitting in an auditorium being babysat with 100 others not really learning if enough staff are out sick. Unless the cdc gets rid of the 5 day isolation, mcps won’t change that procedure.

One difference is that staff no longer get Covid pay if they must quarantine. Expect more masked staff AND more staff showing up who are asymptomatic.

Or, when they have symptoms.

Sadly, you are correct.

Why “sadly”? They still get sick leave for when they’re actually too sick to work.

No enough if they get sick a few times.

Does anyone know how many paid sick days the teachers get? Bus drivers? Support staff?

10 days a year. Which is close to the length of a quarantine period.

I had Covid last week and was still testing positive until day 9. CDC guidelines said to quarantine until not testing positive.

10 sick days a year for 10 month employees (classroom teachers). It will go very quickly if a teacher has even one child of their own. Just normal sick days and doctor appointments eat into it pretty quickly, even without covid isolations/quarantines.

MCEA and SEIU have sick leave banks that kick in when you run out of regular sick leave.

10 days sounds like enough. Quarentines don’t exist anymore. Isolation is only 5 days.

Yes and no. Members have to join the sick leave bank in order to be able to use this type of leave. As a member of the sick leave bank, you must donate 2 of your sick days annually. Most 10-month employees are members of the bank. This means we receive eight sick days annually (after the 2-day donation). I had Covid in December and was very sick. I was out of work for 10 days. The leave can go very quickly, especially for parents with young children who need to take leave when their kids are sick. While I don't have very young children myself, I quickly went through just about all of my own accumulated leave when I needed to have unexpected emergency surgency during the school year.

Listen, we are in for a train wreck if they don’t get rid of the required 5 day isolation. We do NOT have any subs. We have major community spread right now. We need to be able to decide when we as teachers feel okay to come in. Having to cover for so many colleagues was a major part of teacher burnout last year.

Teachers who get covid should stay out until a negative test. Simple!

I was testing positive until day 9. The CDC website says to stay home if you are testing positive after day 5 and complete full 10 day isolation.

If you have no symptoms and no positive rapid test then you can go to work wearing a mask.

It does not say ignore positive test result and go to work with mask.

I’m a teacher too and I’m tired of going to work sick whether it be from Covid or something else. I’m done sacrificing my body because the school district can’t get it together. I will not go to work sick. Simple.

Sounds good to me. There’s no reason for teachers to test in the first place if they feel well enough to work.
