SEL screener survey

I felt very strongly about my DCs not taking the survey for those reasons. ”

Agree 100%.

I do not want my child to be administered interventions by the school based on this sketchy, subjective “screener.”

Worse - the results become part of my child’s permanent record. What if the wrong combination of a mere child’s answers leads to the school deeming my child “mentally ill ?”

Anyone know for certain, the future consequences of a bad score on this SEL test? We are opting out.

And the concern is what, they'll throw your kid out of school? That your kid won't be allowed into AAP because only sane kids get advanced instruction? That they will put "THIS CHILD IS MENTALLY ILL - DO NOT ADMIT" on top of Larla's transcript so she can't go to college?

The hysteria over this stupid survey is something. If you don't want your kid to take it just opt out.

This was the dumbest survey ever and totally a waste of taxpayer funds. That is why I opted my kids out. More people need to actually read the emails from school beforehand and opt out so they will actually stop doing these stupid things.

As tax payers, we are allowed to question what Panorama has done so far with the information collected from our kids —besides making a fortune — or having FCPS casually release it to parents, some of whom are not even sure how to interpret the results, while many others continue to resent the significant amount of time and budget allocated to this social experiment when there are so many other academic needs and priorities that are more pressing given the learning loss students have experienced in the last decade, not to mention as a result of the pandemic.
We don’t need further explanation nor justification from FCPS on the validity of this SEL program since most parents don’t necessarily need outsiders to do our jobs in that area, and when we do, we seek the assistance of true professionals rather than relying on a for-profit company. What we need from FCPS instead, is to learn more about how our kids are doing academically and how they are using funds allocated to the school for remediation where needed, or to further growth in that area. In order to do so, funding needs to go to hire many more teachers and aids to decrease class sizes—as well as to increase their wages and decrease their administrative work so they can focus on teaching; to hire (and better pay) more custodians, clinic aides, and other faculty support staff that will allow for teachers to focus on instructing and class management without all those added tasks that have been added to their already heavy workload.
And, unless you are an activist, a politician, or an influencer, most adults prefer to maintain personal information private, especially that of our children, irregardless of where we stand on the political spectrum.

Agree 100%.

Overcrowded MHS is literally falling apart.

- and yet, the current school board chooses to spend this percentage of the budget on the SEL?

You may or may not be aware that some occupations are requiring loyalty oaths to certain politics, Since the internet never forgets, I would be concerned.

They do not make it easy.

No online opt-out option, as far as I can tell.

It requires printing a paper form, signing it, delivering it, and hoping it gets to the right person.

This is correct. I opted out all 3 of my kids. One was given, and took, the survey (5th grade) anyway - we weren't told the day the survey was going to be given so I had told him he was opted out but he didn't know that was the one. Got the stupid results.

I would be calling the school complaining.

When are they planning to subject the kids to the winter survey?

I read the site as you did that opt-out applied to fall and spring, but shouldn't have as wasn't honored for Spring.

We got a note from our ES VP this morning about this. It will be given during the same period as SOLs, which we all know are way over-pressured in ES. Dontcha think that's going to crank up the stress level? Totally absurd.
