VA Teachers: which gubernatorial candidate would be better for education (single policy opinion)

One of our friends had his elementary aged son come home and tell him that his teacher said white people don’t like (or maybe he said “hate”) black people.

Is it possible that the student could have been referring to a lesson on the civil rights era, when it was true that some white people didn’t like black people? Or should this era not be mentioned to 10-year-old fifth graders? Or should they be taught that there were good people on both sides? As a teacher, should I submit my lesson plans to the parents in my class so they can approve each one?

Last year, I worked in a fourth grade class that was held over zoom during the day after January 6th. The students had questions. At some point, you have to trust the teachers. They can’t get minute-by-minute parent approval.

I forgot if the child is kindergarten or first grade.

Well one candidate is of a party that kept your schools closed for a year, the other (Youngkin) wants to actually educate children.

No brainer. Open Schools or Closed Schools. Take your pick.

Newsflash: the pandemic is winding down. Kids are in classrooms. The rest of us are looking ahead.

I wish both candidates were seated in front of parents asking questions about public education.

Younkin’ plans to “educate” children include increasing lies, bullying, discrimination, unhealthy practices.

Both candidates had 20 min interviews and McAuliffe left after 10 min when the education issue came up. He said the interviewer should have better questions to ask.

I know McAuliffe sent his kids to private school. But I'm curious about private equity titan Youngkin -- did he do the same? His children all look to be adults now.

I think this is germane because he's behaving like he's one of us with kids in public schools or those who teach in schools. I bet he actually has zero experience with public schools at all.

It's really funny how they think McAuliffe made a gaffe with his comment that parents shouldn't tell schools what to teach, though. What a miscalculation.

One of McAuliffe’s kids went to Langley. Youngkin sent his to Georgetown Prep.

See, has anyone asked him if he told Georgetown Prep what to teach?

I wonder where they went to elementary school.

I don't know did McAuliffe tell Potomac school how to teach or Gonzaga? I think that Youngkin is saying that parents should understand what their children are being taught. Different when it is funded by tax payer dollars than a private school that is not.

Good news for you. VDOE has the curriculum all documented online:
https://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/standards_docs/

Now you don't need to vote for a Trumphumper over a non-issue.

I don't know who is Trumphumper, there were only two candidates when I voted last week - Younking and McAuliffe.

Oh! That’s easy. It’s the candidate who bent over and did everything he needed to do to get the Trump endorsement.

Teachers who choose Youngkin are going to be in for a surprise if he gets elected

He and all the Trumpkins will be sending you all subpoenas for your curriculum, emails, and all devices that have been on FCPS domain to communicate with your students

No mask mandate

Funds transferred from DOE budget to private schools and charters

It isn’t really about parent-teacher interactions. It’s more about parents having input at the school district level. For example, our school had a meeting to discuss the possibility of switching away from a French immersion program (that was around for 30 years). Parents arrived to participate in discussion. At the end of the meeting the principal told parents it didn’t matter what they decided on option A, because the decision was already made to go with option B. Even Native speakers of the new option left the school zone, because they weren’t happy with the change.

I promise you that if Youngkin is elected in this “parents choose” platform, RWNJs all over the state will feel empowered to dictate to teachers how and what h to their kids will be taught.

I very much doubt this. Anecdotally it seems the wealthier and/or more educated parents are the ones who complain and bother teachers the most. Since Trumpers are uneducated, this shouldn’t be an issue.

Oh, plenty of Trumpers are educated and wealthy, especially in VA. They’re just willfully ignorant and selfish.

Not that it matters, because Youngkin is going to lose anyway.

Only if they’re a ridiculous, stunted, overgrown adolescent.

It’s one thing to reflexively support public schools, but I do wish both candidates would be questioned on how they would react if their kids were one of 30 students crammed into a trailer, or an advanced student in a differentiated classroom who spends the year in the corner doing math worksheets while the teacher helps other students, or the quiet girl who is seated next to boys with behavioral problems whom the school refuses to discipline. All of these things happened to my kid in FCPS long before COVID. McAuliffe’s kids went to private school, and I’m pretty sure none of them ever had to deal with any of this.

(Not a teacher, but my mom was.)

Youngkin’s kids went to Georgetown Prep which is both exclusive and private.

It would be nice not to have billionaire candidates but I’m voting for the guy who didn’t have the Bin Laden family as a client on 9-11-01.

Terry McAuliffe's kids went to the Potomac school and is also exclusive and private. Youngkin has one child at Georgetown Prep. At least one of the others went to St Albans. FYI

The Bin Laden family was an investor in Carlyle when Youngkin was not even co -President. That was not even until 2014.

There are so many shady deals that Terry McAuliffe has been involved in. Youngkin not even in the same category. I understand that you just want to vote for the Democrat which is fine but lets not cast stones.

+100

McAuliffe is more crooked than a barrel of snakes!

WTF. Are you posting from a trailer park in rural Arkansas?

+1. But then, you knew that already.
