Middle School Cheerleading

Anonymous
Hi there,
I know this doesn’t seem that important but we are moving to the area for next year and my daughter will be in 8th. She’s very into cheer and dance and is currently on her middle school cheer squad. Do MCPS middle schools even have cheer? A friends daughter mentioned her school didn’t, I was just wondering if any do? Thanks in advance.

No, they do not.

Most girls that age seem to do private cheer clubs before trying out in HS

We moved from out of state and to say our daughter was bummed out about this is an understatement. MCPS does not provide the same opportunities as many other schools across the country do, I'm not sure why it's considered such a good school district. Our gifted and talented program at our school was much more intense and it absolutely was not lottery based. Kids that qualified for G/T services were provided them without question. This move has been a letdown.

MS are very limited with sports and activities. You have to do most things privately.

You’re preaching to the choir. There are pluses and minuses here though—it’s not all bad (though this depends on what school you’re at).

There are several private gyms in the county to get the kids ready for high school cheer. My dd did Cheer Extreme DMV which was fine (but not amazing).

A lot of MS girls do poms before transitioning to cheer in HS

Where do they do Poms? My DD is a MCPS Pom and has never heard of anyone doing Poms before starting in HS.

You know MCPS has his feelings. I don't think that its sports offerings is something that I would really rank very high in terms of importance for children's education. However I am a total curmudgeon about the American obsession with putting kids in high level competitive sports at a young age

DD is in 11th grade now and doesn't do cheer anymore. In middle school she used to do Shockwave Allstars (rebranded as Cheer Extreme now I believe)

Cheer in MS is very school dependent. It is a club, not a school sponsored sport like soccer. Newport Mill had a pep squad (I hesitate to call it cheerleading) when my kids were there. Problem with clubs is that you need a teacher and kids who are interested. It isn't going to happen every year. MCPS MS sucks a** academically and activity-wise. Anybody who tells you MCPS MS doesn't know better or is just lying.

SCMS had poms when my daughter was there.
