Best running tights?

Anonymous
I am delighted with my Cherry Blossom 10-Miler time, and want to treat myself to a nice new pair of running tights.

As background, I ran this morning in an old pair that is probably older than my teenager. I am a straight size medium with a curvy build — tights don’t ever fall down on me, as there’s plenty to prevent that.

I spent over $100 once on Athleta fleece-lined leggings, and I am delighted with them.

Any suggestions for a lightweight/medium-weight pair of running tights for me, up to $100? I’m overwhelmed with choices and looked at Lululemon, Athleta, and Oiselle so far.

My absolute hands down favorite are the Athleta Rainier. I love them so much.

In the winter I wear the regular (brushed) version, but the rest of the year the untrusted are perfect.

Good for you!

It’s getting too warm for leggings. You should buy shorts.

I live in rainier for running all winter but they’re too warm for most of spring and summer.

I chafe easily (especially when it’s warm/I'm overdressed)and so look for things with minimal seams. I am eying some lululemon run free tights because they don’t have an inner seam. I also love the fleece tights from athleta but find their other styles kind of droop (and then I chafe…sigh).

Have you tried the unbrushed model? They do not have them in stock right now, so you can’t go look…but they are the same design but made from a very light weight fabric with mesh all the leg on the sides.

I hate running in shorts and wear the lighter Rainiers all summer.

Following this post. I've been looking for the same.

Shorts don't work because they ride up on my inner thighs. I'm looking for good cropped leggings or "bike shorts" with pockets that will stay in place...

For long runs and races, I really like the Lululemon Fast and Free tights. It is hard to tell from the pics online, so you may want to see them in person. They have 2 deep pockets on the sides that firmly hold my phone, gloves, headlamp if I take it off, etc. The waistband is also pockets - like 3 wide pockets with open tops. Perfect for gels. For a race, I put my car keys, ID and a credit card in the center back pocket and safety pin it shut. My oldest pair of F&F are 6 years old and I wear them a lot - they look almost new. I am a size 14/32 in jeans and I wear a size 12.

My other favorite leggings are Sweaty Betty Power / Higher Power. Power leggings look really good but are also really comfortable. They have a zipper pocket in the back waist for car keys if you drive to your runs. They have a lot of compression and structure - they are are the only leggings I sometimes wear as pants when not working out because they look more polished. They have good pockets on the side. The material is a smidge thicker than the Lulu ones and they are better suited for cooler days. The Higher Power version is the same pants, but the waistband is smooth - no drawstring, no extra pockets. It looks like it would roll, and many things roll on me, but not those. The higher power are a sleeker look and best for when you don’t need to bring a lot of stuff. I wear a size L.

If you go to Lulu in person and try on different styles, you can buy them on the website LuluLikeNew which is part of Lulu itself for returns and other things they didn’t sell. You can usually get them for half price. I “invested” in one pair of Sweaty Betty black tights on a 25% off sale, but the rest of my SB rights are the funky prints I get on clearance.

Lulu will hem the F&F to knee length - you can’t go shorter because of the pocket design.

The SB power come in 7” and 9” shorts, but not the higher power version.

Lululemon. Base pace or Fast and Free. Base pace is lighter but no pockets if you care about that. Both are great. I own many pairs.

Then you need longer, compression (think bike) shorts. Mine don't ride up but I've definitely tried some on that do.

I've been really happy with my old navy leggings, both for running and non-fitness activities. No pockets but they fit well, wash/wear well and come in some cute patterns. I'm 5'8" and a size 6 so a medium works.
