What topics missed from AAP 6th to Algebra 1 HN?

Anonymous
Are there any math topics that are skipped (or very minimally covered) by doing this jump?

None, they are covering 7th grade math in LIV/Advanced Math in 6th. The big difference is that they are moving into a HS paced course and the Teachers will expect them to keep up with that pace. I have a friend with an 8th grader taking Algebra. She said her child complains about the 7th graders all the time because they are not organized, don’t have the right materials, and it slows down the stat of class. The kids are able to do the material but they are less together. My friends advice to me was to work on that with my child if they end up in Algebra as a 7th grader.

Equitable math can only be achieved if we slowdown just a bit. Far too many are enrolling in Algebra 1 in 7th.

Agree, other than bragging rights there's no point enrolling in advanced math path, unless student is interested in competitive math like math counts, math Olympiad, and maybe for stem, TJ, etc.

My 7th grader and her friends complain about 8th graders who are slow to grasp concepts and ask obvious questions slowing down the class

Everything need not be equitable. Either way, some will be hurt. Slowing it down hurts the top, which makes little sense when there are options for all levels.

Advanced 7th graders should be encouraged to help out the 8th graders, like mine who learn better from peers. This is first time DD loves math class, and 7th grader is her BFF now.

The friend’s kid said the 7th graders can do the work, they just need more support because they have not had the experience in 7th grade that requires less support. The issue for most of the 7th graders taking HS classes in 7th grade is that they are used to more support and are not as well organized. I have heard this from the language Teacher, my kid is in language immersion, the 7th graders struggle with the pace and organizational demands of the class not the material per se.

The number of kids enrolling in Algebra 1 in 7th grade is pretty small. Last I looked the AAP centers are at or just below 200 kids and they are pulling from multiple schools. Most schools have 30 or fewer 7th graders in Algebra 1.

She said it slowed down the class. My 7th grader complains about the teacher having to go over the same concept multiple times because a couple of the 8th graders have trouble keeping up. Maybe it's comming from different centers, but the amount of work she's doing at home doesn't seem different from 6th. The biggest difference is she's getting much higher scores on tests in 7th

Right, that’s the reason most of our kids who are on the advanced math path are there. It has absolutely nothing to do with “bragging rights.”

I find these comments odd. My DS took Algebra in 7th grade with ALL 7th graders. He does have a couple of 7th graders in his Geometry class now in 8th grade. He does not complain about them. I am sure they are very smart. I had no idea it is mixed at some schools. I guess those are schools where there are not enough 7th graders for even one whole class??? (There were multiple sections of 7th grade Algebra H at DS's AAP center.)

Is this correct? Our MS (which is not a center but I thought they had rolled out LIV to every MS and were basically done with centers) has 2 7th grade Algebra I classes and 2 8th grade Geometry classes, so 50-60 7th graders in Algebra I.

And this is how you lose all credibility.

What efforts are being put in place to improve math at these bottom schools? Of course, kids can graduate HS with the bare minimum Algebra 2 and taking it as pass/fail.
