This thread is not meant as a WM vs SAHM debate but my friends and I noticed an interesting (to us) pattern. Those of us with mothers that did not work when we were growing up are working moms. The ones whose mothers worked are now SAHMs.
So, did your mom work or SAH and what do you do? I'll start, my mom stayed at home with us and I work full time. |
| I had a working mom growing up and I'm a FT working mom. |
| My mom worked PT and I work FT |
| My mom SAH and I work FT. |
| mom worked FT and so do I. |
I work full time. Hard to connect it to my mom because I was raised in a rural section of a country where most people (men and women) did not really have "jobs" outside of the home/farm. |
| My mom worked PT and I work FT. |
| My mom worked FT and I do too. She always encouraged me to have a job even after children because you never know what can happen in life. Easy to understand why she has this idea since my grandpa passed away leaving my grandma with 9 kids to raise alone. |
| I work FT, and my mom always did too. |
| My single mom worked full time after staying home with me for two years (she was divored when I was 4). I am a SAHM for now with my 14 month old, but am unsure how long i'll stay out of the workforce. |

I work 32 hours a week (so considered PT on DCUM but FT to my company).
My mom worked PT at a school near our house starting when I (her youngest) was in first grade. I really thought of her as a SAHM though because she only worked a few days a week and I just went to my neighbor's/friend house or sat on my porch with my friend until she got home, usually at the same time or ten minutes after me. While this is an interesting question, the economy is so different in 2010 DC area vs. my small town in the 1980s. My dad worked for the same company for 30 years, retired with an awesome pension, and health insurance was a non issue. A totally different world than now. My mom also got married to my dad and went from her all school's school dorm to living with him, had her first at 24. I had my first at 34, after living alone and working, a grad degree, etc. Really, really hard to compare. |
| Mom did not work and neither do/will I. |
| Mom worked part time. I work full time. I would like to work part time, but it isn't an option at my workplace. |

I work full time. My mom worked full time. My sister worked full time but recently quit (retired as she says).
14:52 just curious if you have a daughter would you want her to have a career? |
| My mom was a SAHM and so am I. And to 15:08, I had a career. May go back, may not. |
