My shoulder has been hurting for several weeks I think after I overdid it on downward dog/ planks etc.
I have SO MANY drs appts for other things and I cannot take more time for this at this time. Anyone else had similar? Did it turn out to be shoulder strain or tendonitis or something? My body is falling apart. |
| Shoulder complex is very complicated. Nobody is going to be able to give you advice on this over the internet. |
| Tendonitis will feel like burning pain when you lay back. You may have pulled a muscle or strained it. Depending on your age, it may take some time to heal and you risk reinjuring it. If you really don't want to see a doctor for this, then google your situation until you figure out the injury. Then, look up PT exercises for it and do them until you are healed. I wouldn't do handstands or otherwise put weight on the area until you feel better. It could be months, though, or you could see an orthopedist. |
| When I developed intense pain after what seemed like a minor trip and fall, it was a rotator cuff tear. |
| My shoulder hurt for years - decades even. I was a swimmer. I didn't swim during the covid lockdowns and it improved markedly. I agree that shoulders are very complex and I don't think humans were designed to rotate their arms like windmills thousands of times every day. |

The nickname for Chaturanga is often referred to as “shoulder shredder”. Is that part of your practice?
I’d see a sports medicine doctor. You could try a physical therapist first, but I’ve always had better luck w/doctor first and then PT vs straight to PT. I had the start of a rotator cuff tear after many years of daily yoga and regular rock climbing. Shoulders are very tricky and IME very hard to heal and restrengthen. Not all PTs are good with shoulders, which is why I’d start with a specialist for proper diagnosis. |
DP I've had shoulder issues for years. Many years ago it was diagnosed as bursitis, which I never hear about anymore. It stopped hurting for a long time but came back in recent years, and I suspected it was related to "Pilates pushups" and triceps pushups, which I don't do often but having my arms at that angle seems to aggravate my shoulder in a way that regular pushups don't. I think Chaturanga has a similar arm placement so maybe I was right? |
| I was lucky. When I did planks, my shoulder hurt. I weighed going to PT vs. stopping planks. For me, stopping planks worked. |
| tendonosis i bet |
yes a lot of these. urgh i live at the dr. |
| Can be frozen shoulder, which is pretty annoying but treatable with PT and/or eventually resolves on its own. Orthopedist can diagnose pretty easily. Risk factors include being over 40, being female, and having type 1 diabetes. |
Yes, I was going to say this also. I had it at age 43. It didn’t hurt while at rest, but it hurt to move into certain positions, and it was burning pain if I made a sharp movement. |
Stop doing the chaturanga while in full plank position. It's too much pressure on your shoulders. Switch to your knees. tilt forward a bit. And keep elbows near ribs as you scoop down and then up to up dog. Or, really, give your shoulders a rest for two weeks first. Then go back and do the chaturanga with knees on the floor. Put your ego aside. |
