Private & Independent Schools
Vent post: after receiving our financial aid determination—less than I'd hoped—the sticker shock of how much this is going to cost is sinking in... How do people afford this?

| DH and I are both trust fund kids. |
| Grandparents pay. |
| Selling stock. |
| We are high earners and have built a nice commercial real estate portfolio that has been flourishing (only a 20 month dip during the pandemic for one location). |
| Our son has been in private since pre k and he’s in 11th now. Our HHI was $150 when he started, and $240 now. We’ve never gotten aid. What makes it work for us is low housing cost - we live in a small, shabby house in PG county. House is worth under $400k. |

Wow, aren't you a negative Nelly! |
Same here. Plus we have high salaries. |

Make a lot of money...
Prioritize education over other things you could be buying... Trust funds... Rich relatives... Inherited housing...plus large salary....etc etc There's a reason many of these schools don't have a lot of economic diversity. |
| Lots of law partners, surgeons or other specialists, consulting firm partners. Basically lots of people making $500k+ in our school. Those who aren’t have rich grandparents. |
| Only sending one kid to private plus a HHI of $500k plus bought our house in 2008 (our kid is in high school now) |

Chose an affordable school with low tuition.
Drove old cars and didn’t take vacations abroad. Grandparents contributed. For middle school, grandparent was cool with us taking money out of 529 to pay tuition. |
| For us it’s grandparents. |
| They have more money than you do and thus can afford luxury goods. Why is this not obvious? |
