ACPS Cancels All Foreign Exchange Programs

Anonymous
Because they presume some families don't have the funds to participate. So if Timmy's dad didn't save correctly, Billy can't go with the money his family scrimped away for 6 months.

These are voluntary programs. No one is forced to go.

How is that even remotely fair?

Can Billy go abroad another way?

Sure, but Billy won't get the immersive cultural experience that an exchange program offers. The funny thing about this is ACPS is simultaneously screwing kids in Alexandria, France, and Germany.

Great job guys!

Billy can have the immersive experience via CIEE. Most of these programs are privately run, in fact.

I think you've probably framed this in bad faith. Deliberately so. What policy are you referring to, exactly.

I think you are an ACPS apologist and anyone that disagrees with you must be a......... racist. Right?

The info is out there and you're welcome to find it.

What a mess! Especially because other students in the exchange program’s sister locations were likely already planning for and relying on this opportunity. I hope they find a way to keep the program, but this seems like a typical ACPS move. And they apparently made the decision without really consulting teachers, parents, etc who had already committed and made plans for it.

How popular were these programs? I’ve been a high school teacher in another local district for over 20 years and I’ve never had an exchange student in any of my classes.

Are you talking about living abroad with another family for a year? Or do you mean when a foreign language class takes an optional trip to another country and the parents pay.

I don’t think of the second as exchange students but privately planned trips, usually not affiliated with the school and planned by the teacher.

If I understand correctly, these are short-term annual exchanges, with this year’s scheduled to take place this spring. Is that right?

These were planned by teachers for kids in foreign language classes and they were short-term visits/exchanges. Also quite popular, especially before the pandemic! It sounds like the teachers planning the trips for this year were totally blind-sided by the sudden cancellation.

Like most of what ACPS does, the logic is fuzzy and the result is disappointing.

With no explanation. It’s a perfect example of the amateur-hour operation of the school district. Where else would this happen?!

That sucks! I’m sorry.

Extremely popular. This year they had a competition for the spots in the French program. I think 44 kids applied for 20 spots. So, yeah.

Putting aside the policy, some advice. First, you come off as a complete douche bag. Second, you have no clue what poverty is like.
