I have been hearing conflicting information. A friend told me hers went up about 50% when they added their teen, but another friend told me hers went up 100%! That’s a huge difference!
Curious how much yours has gone up. Thanks! |
| Ours just about doubled. But we put DD and another car on the policy. |
| 50% increase. Also, we eventually dropped collision coverage on our older cars because we would never file for damages under $5000 anyway if our teen caused the damage, which he did. |
|
The 100% increase is likely if you have a car for your teen. My agent warned me that is the biggest increase.
Just adding we dropped collision on DS (old) car in college. He totaled it 6 weeks later. |
Is that a car in the TEEN’S name, or just a third (fourth, fifth…) car? I ask this because we are about two years away from having a kid with a learner’s permit, but we also want to get a new car before for one of us before they start driving, and just keeping the old car around for them to learn in and eventually drive. It’ll be in our name. |
| Ours went up 100 percent for a boy. When we bought his car we were told that it couldn't be in his name until he is 18. |
| Ours just about doubled for our 18 year old boy. |

When I was 19 with two speeding tickets I had balls to buy a used $200 car and register it in a state with no insurance requirements.
New Hampshire you still need no car insurance. I picked a random Address to register. Did it via mail and clicked mailing address different than registration address. You be surprised how many cars on road like this. I avoid cars with New Hampshire plates |
| Car insurance is such a racket. We have policies but it still pisses me off that it’s such a scam. |

GEICO. H&W, late 40’s, no accidents or tickets, 3 cars - 16 Wrangler, 13 Outback, 04 Vette. Annual premium for both of us on all 3 vehicles, $1,840.
Added 2 sons, 17 and 19, both sharing a 2012 Prius, (not drivers on the other 3 cars) no tickets or accidents, and the annual premium for the four of us on all four vehicles is $6,186. What a racket. |

17y boys that share a car with good student discount added $200/month.
4 drivers. 3 cars $5000/annually |
What company and what deductible did you select? |
Similar - 17 year old girl and 15 year old girl (soon to be 16). Currently have three drivers on policy, 3 cars $5200 annually with $1000 deductible. One 2024 Honda (teen car) and two six year old European cars (husband and mine). |
| To be fair, my 17 year old has already had an at fault accident with $4500 in damage to the other car because he is a knucklehead. It's OK, I never wanted to retire anyway |
Sounds like it’s time for him to pay his own way if he wants to keep driving. |
