Volleyball: Recommendations for Summer Camps/Clinics Rising 8th Grade Girl

Anonymous
Hi,

I'm looking for feedback on DMV volleyball summer camps and clinics. I found the Virginia Volleyball Alliance camp list which is great but I'm trying to figure out which camps are going to help her get better vs. packing in tons of girls with not enough support. She is playing club currently. Would love any recommendations for summer camps/clinics. Focus on outsider hitter/middle is a plus. Thank you.

A lot of the private schools have evening camps. Those are usually just 2hrs long and might have more focused teaching. I can't speak to all of them, obvi.

In our experience- many camps are somewhat luck of the draw- who you actually get as a coach for your player that day/session. Sometimes amazing, sometimes meh, most of the times- in between. If you are looking for more specific instruction on form/volleyball IQ- learning how to read the court, adjust for your position etc, privates (including small group privates) are typically the way to go. Not sure if Maureen (paramount director) still does small group lessons- but she was one of the best coaches for small groups, hands down. Another coach who is amazing- favorite coach of most people I know who have worked with her- Lisa Smith. She is not affiliated with any club at this time but has previously coached metro travel and STJ. She actually runs clinics year round- but has limited court time/availability. Here is her Instagram with info

There are various clubs in the DMV area that offer summer clinics. You may inquire whether the club your DD is currently playing for offers summer clinics. Consider signing up for clinics offered by other clubs, especially if you are contemplating jumping ships.

Do not go to East Coast Power clinics unless your DD plays for them. Mine went and was told to play with the other non-club girls and the coaches never coached. They only gave instruction to the club girls. It was a complete waste of money. I have heard good things about No Panic training but DD hasn't been yet.

Based on past experiences with my kid, these camps and clinics will not dramatically improve your daughter as much as private lessons or small group privates. You will need to do these lessons consistently over a period of 1-2 months.

I thought EC Power was located in Pennsylvania. Do they have any affiliate in the DMV region?

My kid attended one club "makeup" tryout at Metro (and is not playing there), but we forgot to unsubscribe from their mailing list. Here is what they recently sent about their summer opportunities:

Looks like they changed their name to Mojo. My DD is not a club player, so I am not up to date.

I can’t speak to quality but saw Woodson HS has a clinic this summer.

EC Power Chesapeake was a local club until last fall, when they dissolved. Some of the coaches went to Mojo, others started Renaissance. Search it up here if you want to learn more about the ECP/Mojo merger and then split and then collapse of ECP here.

Apparently, there is a club called East Coast Elite (not Power) that practices in Germantown:

One team per age group 15+ (except 16, where they have two teams)

Metro Summer Camps

Expensive and not good for technique improvement. we attended one last year, not recommend for serious players.

I felt the opposite about Metro clinics. My daughter (who was a beginner) did not benefit much from them. However, the more advanced players (probably that's what you mean by "serious players"), practiced some pretty advanced skills. I do agree that they are expensive, and - on top of that - they are also crowded. Finding cheaper clinics could be hard because most clubs offer them at similar prices. If you are looking for cheaper clinics, you can try county or city clinics, but the coaches are not very experienced. I doubt that "serious" or less than "serious" players benefit a lot from those clinics.
