| She didn’t do well. She got the lowest score and we got an email from the assistant principal stating that they do not usually share the results of this test until 3rd grade but they are worried. So we had a meeting. One teacher mentioned a neuropsychological evaluation, one teacher said it’s possible our daughter just rushed through the test. What are we to do? Evaluations are costly. Good places charge $5000 and up. Insurance doesn’t cover this. Our daughter’s report cards and weekly school work do not match the test results. K and 1st grade were pure socialization at the school with lots of cartoons. We do get the help for her with math. She goes to a tutoring place once a week. The school also pulls her out for ela and math twice a week (because of the MAP results). And now they want us to evaluate her. Is it worth doing it? She will be 8 in May. She isn’t disruptive in class. Yes, one on one instruction is easier for her, no doubt. But she reads well, write cool stories, her spelling isn’t too bad. HW can be a nightmare through. The school gives daily homework and for ela they give time restrictions like “6 min on coding words and identifying parts of speech” (20 words) and “4 min on writing sentences”. They are stopping this after complaints from parents. Husband wants to go ahead and test her. I feel like it’s too early. Should we wait until the next MAP test? Also, please tell me about this test. Is it like SOL at APS schools? I have to admit, I was much happier when my other kids was at APS. No daily cartoons there. |
| My other kid* |
| Just get the test done. Early intervention if needed is the most useful over the long term. |
| So did she do very poorly on all her other MAPs as well? In 1st and in this fall? |
They said only this one. They said the score actually dropped. |
Move to a school district that doesn't hide kids scores from parents |
|
Opt her out of MAP and SOLs until maybe middle school. Any other concerns will be evident from her regular classroom grades.
- LCPS elementary teacher |
| I would get data on past tests. Then I would wait until the next MAP test. |
|
I would ask for the current test to be repeated, and to see the detailed information on this test and the most recent before.
Why do you say homework is a nightmare? |
| Why isn't the school testing her? If they are that concerned, they should start the process. It sounds like she is doing well in other areas, I would drop the homework or really minimize it in that area to focus on math. And do easy computer programs like Happy Numbers to work on repetition of math programs. They need to give you the MAP scores so you can judge for yourself. What is her math performance like in the classroom? |
|
I would ask to have a history of her scores.
Are they suggesting tested just based on this one test or are there other reasons? I have prepared my kid on how to take the MAP test. It's not easy because it's on computer and you get paper and pencil (check that she got paper and a pencil). If this is MCPS are some practice questions you can try on this website: https://practice.mapnwea.org/#/practice-landing Your school can provide a user name and password. Practice with your child how to solve on paper and then make sure the answer is correctly selected on the screen. I also let me kid know the day before when he will have a MAP test and tell him to try hard on the test and take as much time as he needs. Last time he didn't finish in an hour and he was able to finish it a couple of days later. |

I wouldn't base any decisions on homework, for sure. My older kid always tested very high in everything and did fine in class, yet getting him to do homework was like pulling teeth until he finally matured around fourth grade and just did it. Lots of crying before then. And it wasn't like it took him long to do it, he just didn't want to.
If she is doing fine in class, I would go by that and her teacher's thoughts, not one score. MAP scores drop all the time - could have been a bad day, maybe she was sick, not paying attention, misread something. If she got the lowest score possible (versus lowest in the class, not sure from your wording) then that seems like an indicator that she didn't really do the test. But if the teacher says she is a sweet kid who listens well but has trouble learning, that would be a signal to look into it more. |
| Reads well and writes stories? I’m guessing she didn’t try or there was a system glitch. The school has many ways to test her aptitude, this is not the only data point. Ask for more data before you get an eval. |
So then why has she been getting pull outs for English and math this year then? If only the most recent test low |
Ask them to start testing her for learning disabilities. The fact that her mom says she reads well and writes stories doesn’t have any weight. They need to pay for the testing not you. Especially if they said she had the lowest score. |
