Our kids are on spring break the week before Easter. DH and I have both finagled our schedules and will also have most of that week off, starting Wednesday. We happened upon a really cheap flight and are considering taking a spontaneous vacation, since we won’t be able to go over the summer like usual. The thing is, we have to leave Wednesday and return the following Monday, or flight prices are astronomical.
Our middle schooler has school that Monday after Easter. He’s not doing great in a couple classes, more because he’s lazy and not because he is having difficulties, but he has shown much improvement recently. I know for a fact they won’t have tests on that Monday, but I’m sure he will miss assignments from that day. Do they mostly review after a break, or do they jump right into new learning? I can’t remember. Either way, this feels like it was meant to be since it’s our only opportunity to travel as a family this year. Do we let him miss school that day? Or do we make sure he’s in class that Monday and skip the trip? Wwyd? |
| I'm a middle school teacher and I am taking my kids on a trip and they will also be missing that first day back: tickets cheaper. My kids are in upper elementary. Your kid will be fine. Just make sure that he asks for missing work and gets it done by the due date. Take the trip and enjoy! |
| I wouldn't teach a lazy student that it's ok to miss school for vacation, and I say that as someone who's taking their 5th grader out of school to Dallas that same day for the eclipse. |
Snort. Punish the whole family by denying a vacation! That will motivate MS boys, right? OP, go! One school day one way or the other won’t make or break your kid. |
Yes, his siblings temporarily hating him for this WILL motivate him, actually. |
OP here. The kids don’t even know we have the week off yet, let alone that we might travel. Of course if we decide not to go, we would never stoop so low as to throw our son under the bus! How cruel! |

Do the vacation, OP.

What's cruel is to sabotage a child who's already struggling academically. |
Ok, thank you for your input. |
Wy ask a question you don't want an answer to? |

We're also planning to travel spring break from Monday to Monday this year - and have done so in the past - to get better fares. In our experience they don't jump in the day after break (or the day before break) because a lot of kids are out.
I'd make sure a struggling kid continues on their upward trajectory these next few weeks and maybe also email the teachers to ask what the assignments will be on the first day back so that my kid could complete the work before vacation. |
Not OP, but c'mon. So much hyperbole here. It's just one day. Time spent with family will be a lifelong memory. A missed school day in middle school is a blip in time in the larger scheme of life. |
And for a child who's not having problems, my answer would be different. But a lazy child CANNOT be taught that school doesn't matter. |
Your answer was stupid, quite frankly. And mean-spirited. So we get it and what you are. Now move along. OP is not taking your advice. |
If she's going to take the kid out of school regardless, why ask? |
