Went to a local seafood shop, its pricey but figured I would try it. It was vert smelly, which I realize seafood generally is.
I ordered fish and he starts picking it up, cuts it and puts it on scale with bare hands! Is this even legal? Isn't that against FDA rules? I was so grossed out and taken aback, I wish I had said something but I had my son with me who was throwing a tantrum. Am I being difficult or would you have felt the same? I feel like I am used to everyone in food service wearing gloves? |
| Where was this? |
| It’s a fish… that’s been in the ocean.. has ocean stuff on it… it wouldn’t bother me. |
+1 Are you for real OP? |
So you would feel comfortable as what’s in the ocean just the same as the guys hands on you. |
| Wouldn’t bother me. If stuff like that bothers you, never eat at a restaurant! |
|
The FDA doesn't require gloves while handling food. But if I remember correctly, your county could have different rules.
Gloves can be just as germy and dirty as your bare hands. When I worked at restaurants, we weren't required to wear gloves. We were taught when to wash our hands which would be equivalent to when you'd need to change gloves. Was he handling money or cross contaminating? |
| I thought they have to wear gloves? It seems so unsanitary. How do I know where their hands have been? Seems most higher end establishments always mandate gloves? |
I mean, I’ve swallowed ocean water and was okay with that but I wouldn’t be okay with licking a guys hand. But you do you. |
| Gloves aren't inherently cleaner than hands. Washing hands is often cleaner than wearing gloves. If the guy had a big open sore on his hand, yes I would be grossed out. But I would cook fish well enough to minimize the risk of germs being on the surface anyway. |
| Aren’t you going to cook it? |
|
Did you plan on making sushi with it?
Just cook it. His cooties will be cooked off. |
| Raw fish that you plan to cook anyway? |
|
If it was sushi grade, then yeah, no thanks. But if it is fish I plan to cook, then no. A little grossed out, but whatever about that.

| You think the fisherman wore gloves? Or the guys unloading the fish boat? Or the guys loading the truck at the docks? |
