Office Kitchen

We have a teeny tiny office kitchen. It's about the size of a closet with one piece of counter top about the size of a door mat.

We hired a new guy 2 months back and he has been using that space as his drying rack for the various coffee cups and Tupperwares he brings in. It takes up the entire space and prevents others from using it. A colleague mentioned it to him, "Hey, Greg, please move your things so others can use the counter" and he moved them for about two days but began dominating it again. So, last week, I feigned ignorance about the situation and loudly said "Hey, whose stuff is all over the counter? I need to us it to assemble my salad."

And he sat silent. Dude ignored it. So, just now, I took both of his cereal-bowl-sized coffee mugs and put them in the sink. Now he's walking around the office angrily demanding to know who 'touched' his things.

I thought this was going to just be a funny exchange but I can see it now escalating into his termination.

People are nuts. That is all.

Do you have an office manager? Get them to send out an email about kitchen etiquette. That happens in my office once or twice a year an usually takes care of it. some people lack all common sense and awareness.

Office kitchens are so annoying.

At my old office we had a large kitchen with a dishwasher, that would be run every night and emptied every morning. One of the mgrs would NEVER put his coffee cup in the dishwasher, only in the sink. It pissed me off so much that he treated our admin like his maids.

Is there a cabinet? Can you put the dishes in the cabinet? If no, then ask management to install a cabinet or shelf so that there is more counter space.

Keep us updated!

Tell him what you told us. You asked whose items they were and you put them out of the way.

If he doesn’t want anybody touching his things, he should dry them and put them away immediately.

Yep! If people are annoyed, don't use them. No one needs to get fired over that - what are we a tantruming child?

No one needs to "assemble a salad" at work. No one should be leaving mugs for others to clean.

OP, if you are bothered, make your lunch at home or buy it like normal people do. Don't complain like a child.

In your opinion how should kitchens be used?

+1.

1. It is a kitchen. It is meant to be used as one or it wouldn't exist.
2. Only fools buy lunch everyday. I've been with my current employer for 8 years. Calculating $15 x 240 x 8 at 5% is ~ $35,000. And that isn't calculating the health effects of eating processed trash every day or or the time lost. But hey, who am I to stop a fool from being a fool?

We had a VP who did that. I put his nasty cup back on his desk before I left every night.

I'm visualizing 17 Tupperwares each containing a tablespoon of some magical ingredient that can only touch the others right before eating...

Can you put a table near the kitchen to help with counter space? Otherwise in your case I’d assume there is no counter space and stop using it. You don’t need to assemble your salad, bring it ready to eat at your desk. Do you really want someone fired over a pissing match regarding a countertop the size of a door mat? That’s where you’re going with this?

The employee needs to clean up after himself. His mommy isn’t going to come do it for him.
