Legacy dot com -- messed up obituary (vent)

Anonymous
My family member died. We wrote the obituary the way we wanted it to read.

Family member used their middle name their whole life. In the obituary we did too.

Obituary got copied and reposted, without our permission, on the Legacy dot com website, with the name changed. So where it was supposed to say "Jane Larla Doe died . . . . Larla was born in X city and went to Y school. After school Larla moved to Z city where they met Larlo, got married and raised 17 beautiful children . . . (not the actual text of the obituary) Larla was changed to "Jane".

Why would a company do that? If they'd just copied the obituary, I probably never would have noticed, but why would they edit it? Do they think we made a mistake? The purpose of the site seems to be to take advantage of dead people to get money from their relatives, as it included links "donate here in Jane's memory" or "Pay to plant a tree in Jane's memory".

I got it removed, but why would they do this?

I’m sorry for your loss. Was the obituary correct when it was posted in places you submitted it to? I hope so. I can’t think of any reason why it would have been changed except someone assumed it was a mistake on the part of someone writing it for the family. Sometimes funeral directors just get information from the family and write up an obituary themselves. I’m sorry it was botched.

Yes it was correct on the funeral home website.

Be thankful this wasn’t a “beloved aunt” situation (Curb Your Enthusiasm).

I’m sorry this happened. Wonder if you can contact them and request that it is corrected?
