Hype? What hype?

I’ve spent a lot of time on this board and had two kids go through the college admissions process. My current senior was looking seriously at SLACs in PA. I never heard any “hype” or “noise” about F&M. Not sure what you’re talking about. That said, I was sorry my DC decided they weren’t interested in the school. It seems like a solid school, nice campus, good location in a cute town a great distance from the DMV. The reputation for giving little or no merit aid was a drawback, though.

There is no hype around F&M. There just isn't.

I also haven't heard "hype" about it, but it's a good Top 50 SLAC, solid sciences, nice smart students, small classes, good grad-school placement, nothing too controversial.

Good liberal arts school, cute town, but fairly white, preppy student body and not great merit aid (although I think that is changing?). Not aware of super hype. Feels like Dickinson gets more attention...

I feel like there was more hype when I was in HS; I knew a few super-smart kids who went there. I don’t hear about it at all now. According to Naviance 5 out of ~450 seniors are applying this year.

Dickinson > Gettysburg > F&M

Dickinson > F&M > Gettysburg

Not to be overly picky, but I think this is the line up for these schools. Gettysburg is just a slight notch below the other two.

In terms of hype? or value?

Curious why you and the PP have F&M ranked below either of these schools. Out of the three, it is the most selective and has the highest graduation rate, freshman retention rate and test score midranges. What am I missing that makes Dickinson better? That it's mentioned more in this forum (usually in discussions about safety schools)?

I think F&M is an underrated gem. Great school!

Is a very good school and attracts smart kids, but it’s quite expensive and they aren’t known for merit.

Lancaster is an easy place to go to college. It’s not overwhelming, but has enough to do.
