Kid Lost Key Fob to Toyota Camry

Anonymous
Hello,

My teenager lost the key Fob to our Camry. I called the dealer and they can order a new Fob and program it for "around $500". Are there any cheaper, but as dependable, options? I'm thinking that dealers always tend to be the most expensive option. What if the key was actually stolen and one of his friends has it. Any way to prevent the "lost key" from working? Thanks.

Do you have a current key fob, or did he lose the only one? If you have a current one, ace hardware can do it for a lot cheaper. The big downside would be if he lost if at school or in your neighborhood because then someone has a key to your car and can easily find out which car it is. If he lost the only fob, you probably need a mechanic

ugh, those fobs are ridiculously expensive to buy and program. And sort of a right of passage for teens to lose one - at least in our house (with otherwise responsible teens). I recently traded in a car and they cared more that I had both key fobs for the car than that the car had body damage. The guy told me he'd rather deal with the body damage but the key fob was expensive ("real money") to replace.

Ace Hardware can reprogram the new key Fob? Can they order the new one as well?

So I called Toyota dealer and they said "around $500". I just called Ace Hardware and, because I have a spare, they will be able to order one and reprogram it for $289. Thanks for the tip!

Interesting. I have both but now I wonder if I should make a spare.

They are more generic than you think. For a Toyota, they should have it in stock

I hope you made the kid pay for the replacement.

The second one is the spare. No need for a third unless this is a family habit.

Yes, he is paying for it and he can't drive until we get the new key. I'm not letting him drive with the only key we have. So he's not happy. : )

Do you know where he lost it? I'd be worried about a kid at his school finding. All you have to do is press panic and you'll know which one it goes to

Also, at least for our BMW, it is only possible to have two at a time programmed. We had lost one, replaced it, found the lost one and I wanted it programmed. They told me it could not be done.

Get some airtags on those keys.

My husband just put AirTags on our Honda key fob for this reason. Does your son have a clue of where he lost the key? Maybe somebody has turned it in or if it’s in your house, maybe you scour all the nooks and crannies.
