Explain the appeal of Barbour to me

What would possess someone to spend $$$ for the biggest PITA piece of fashion you have to rewax? What a mess. Just admit, you buy it as a conspicuously display of wealth more so than practical piece of outerwear. Who goes out of their way to buy major inconvenieces like a friggin jacket you gotta wax?
Anonymous
Wait you have to wax it?

You're just ignorant. It's high quality outdoor wear designed for hunting in cold rainy climates. I'm the opposite of a label junky, but I wear Barbour because it actually keeps me warm, but it's not a ski jacket. It's also not that expensive compared to other outerwear labels.

It’s a lifetime purchase that I use for all manner of outdoorsy stuff. It’s amazing. The more patina the better

I hate most labels, you’re really off the mark on this one OP.

I have a quilted jacket. It’s lightweight, just the right amount of warm, and will probably last a lot longer than the similarly styled Ralph Lauren jacket that it’s replacing because the Barbour is designed with longevity and utility in mind. I imagine that this is even more the case with the waxed coats. OP, if the features of the coats and jackets aren’t ones that you need, then you don’t really need to understand their appeal. I tend to buy things that work well for me with a reasonable cost per wearing — rather than fashion. That’s true of most of the people I know who’ve been buying brands like Barbour and Orvis for years. It really has nothing to do with what other people might think, and it’s pretty tacky to be mentally adding up the costs of someone else’s clothes, and even tackier to assume that other people have chosen their outfits based on what others might think.

Its not any more ridiculous than a Canada goose.

Apparently I need to re-wax mine. How exactly does one go about doing that?

A lot of ski jackets now say to refresh their waterproofing with a spray coating. I hate that, but it's getting more common.

You can do it yourself. Or for a fee, Barbour will do it for you. It is on their site.

$50 and they recommend annual rewax. Seems like a pain to me.

Are the coats heavy?

Really basic stuff that seemed popular in 2015 and now looks pretty dated.

Whatever makes you sleep better at night, OP 😆

Nope. It’s a major inconvenience. Have fun making a mess rewaxing or paying yearly fees to the store just so you can wear it. What a joke.
