How do large rosters work U13+

Anonymous
DD is a rising U12, likely on track to make ECNL RL at her current club next year. Looking at the roster sizes for ECNL RL in Nova I see a lot of 20+ rosters, especially as they get to U15+. Wondering how this is managed.

Do teams have players on an ECNL RL roster that rarely make a game day roster?
Do they rotate the bottom players to be active/inactive?
How much playing time do nonstarters get with 18 on a game day roster?

Thanks for the info

If you are just going by the RL website, it isn't always accurate. MY DD's RL team has an extra 4 players on the online roster because they guest played in a tournament pre-season and are listed on the roster. However, they don't play with the team during the season, so what looks like a roster of 20 players is really only 16. Not sure what other clubs experience is. Also, as girls get older, there is likely to always be 1-2 injuries, so that cuts the number of players for a particular game.

This. DD's old team rostered anyone they might use at some point in the season. Talk to the coach if you are concerned. RL is not ECNL- there is no excuse for rostering more kids than you can dress on a regular basis

Try out at as many clubs as possible and see what offers you get.

Clubs like to bring on new players from outside because this is how they make more money.

If your club knows that your kid is trying out at other clubs they'll either be really nice to them (if they want them to stay) or they'll be indifferent/mean to them (if they want them to leave).

Either way you know where you stand with the club and if you have multiple options you can go somewhere else.

If a coach ever asks you why you're trying out at different clubs say "it's our families policy to try out at multiple clubs every year".

There's no way for a coach to respond to this because it's just a spin on what clubs say to parents "Its our policy to run tryouts every year".

Kids get injured all the time. Vary rarely do high school ages have kids that sit in a game since injuries occur. I think it's important to have more than 18.

18 allows for multiple injuries at the same time. You can also move kids up from other teams. RL is not ECNL. This kids are paying to play, not positioning themselves for college recruitment

RL families will disagree with your statement there.

Then they're delusional. ECNL/MLS next/GA are where kids looking to play in college go and where they focus is on recruitment

There are usually 8 or so regular players, another 3 starters who come out pretty quickly and share time with a couple of bench players. The other bench players might get 5 minutes before halftime.

I doubt they are guaranteeing playing time, correct? These coaches need to win games to keep their jobs.

So bottom players on ECNL RL are only getting in for 10-15 minutes a game? Is that pretty standard across clubs in Virginia?

Does ECNL-RL have the same substitution rules as ECNL for league games (so that players can only be subbed once per half)?

The substitution rule makes it very tough with large rosters in ECNL. The temptation for coaches is to wait until very near the end of the half to sub, and then bring everyone in at once, which makes the team really vulnerable. So all kids get a "chance to play," but 9 minutes per half, playing with essentially the second team, is demoralizing.

If that. The Coach may run out of patience for a particular player who then gets no playing time. No guarantees of playing time.

Those kids are getting 18 minutes of time. OP asked about 20 kid rosters. 2 of those kids are getting no time because you are not allowed to dress 20
