Recommend casual dishes to buy - starting from scratch

Looking for some nice sturdy dishes to buy - happy to buy a set but do not want any mugs! Any recommendations on where to go to buy service for 12-16 people, dinner, salad plates, and bowls?

corelle dinnerware sets from Walmart.com (or online on any store that sells it cheap). Buy several sets so that you can get service for 16-20 people.

PSA - do not use dishwasher detergent tablets in the dishwasher to wash them. It basically makes the edges very rough. Use only gel dishwasher detergent and it will last for ever.

I love plain white dishes since you can mix/match with more decorative/colorful pieces at holidays, etc.

We got ours at Macys and supplement with Crate and Barrel.

Ikea - I’d get simple white that will not be discontinued, east to replace & heart not broken if a piece breaks.

I like the Corelle because they are light and break resistant. We have the plain white.

My family had Corelle growing up and my sister has a pretty set that is 20 years old. I thought about getting one for myself but we have porcelain tile floors and I've had a Corelle dish EXPLODE after being dropped. This happens to Corelle. There must have been a thousand sharp shards all over the kitchen. I am still finding them. I can't recommend them for that reason.

We have this set but with the blue bands. Going on 10 years and love them! Only one plate has broken, and that was by dropping it on the stone patio after eating outside one night. I appreciated how easy it was to buy a replacement piece even years later.

Many dishes have lead. I cannot figure out why those still are allowed. Pediatrician warned us about this when our first was born. Even if no kids, one might want to look into that and maybe prefer a set that is lead-free.

I like fiestaware. They are super sturdy and are still made in the USA so no weird chemicals. They are always on sale at Thanksgiving but you might be able to catch a Macy’s sale at some other random holiday.

All the stuff I have bought from crate and barrel looks good and then cracks into a million pieces. Their glasses are the worst.
