IB Math - Math AI vs Math AA

Anonymous
For those with kids who pursued the full IB diploma, can you rate what the math courses are roughly equivalent to vice AP or honors math?

Math AI SL - Would this be like Honors Precalc?
Math AI HL
Math AA SL
Math AA HL

DC won't have the option of taking AP classes in conjunction with the IB program, so any information would be helpful.

Thanks!

OP here. I forgot to mention that I'm posting this here because we're trying to figure out which courses would satisfy calculus requirements for certain universities.

Your best bet is to check the IB credits granted at the colleges you are looking at, but SL classes are generally not accepted for college credits.

From what I've determined, Analysis is like Calc BC with some stats thrown in. Applications is more like Stats with some calculus thrown in.

DS was going to take precalc + AP Stats. Counselor suggested he do HL Applications.

According to this curriculum overview (subject briefs), Analysis HL has 55 hours of calculus, and Applications HL has 41 hours.

Fwiw, I'm not at all concerned about college credit, but moreso trying to figure out whether it's feasible for DC to be able to satisfy the HS requirement of 1 year of calculus for some universities. DC is in Algebra 1 in 9th grade so its tough.

Have you posted a ton of the AP classes questions lately?

As I stated in my OP, AP classes aren't an option so this question really doesn't make sense.

Both include basic calculus for minimum requirements.

AA is more rigorous for STEM.

AI is for softer social science like psychology and non "academia" majors like business.

Do AA if you have interest and ability.

No. AI SL is not a rigorous math course and not equivalent of honors precalc. It is a good course for students who are not as strong in math and not majoring in STEM.

Have your kid take AA HL if you are looking for H precalc and calc.

How is AA SL viewed by engineering schools?

OP here. DC would prefer AA, but we don’t know if that’s an option for kids who won’t have trigonometry completed by 10th grade. Unfortunately, the school won’t accept math credits taken elsewhere or DC would complete Geometry this summer.

This is what I was looking for, thanks!

True- university just rejected DC because DC needed precalc and AI is not precalc.

If you want college credit similar to AP credit, only HL AA will count.
DD did SL AA, had to fulfill Calculus first semester but handled it just fine with SL AA background.
For engineering, I think your kid should take HL AA as SL AA may not be strong/advanced enough
