Moving back to Alexandria (from abroad) in the summer ahead with two elementary-age children. The public school my kids would be attending is Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 IB School. I have been talking to folks in ACPS, as well as reading up on the school and really know next to nothing. The common theme focuses on red flags and avoidance. Nearly everyone has told me to avoid this school.
What am I missing regarding Jefferson-Houston? Am I setting my kids up for failure by sending them to this school? |
The principal is terrible. |
The system is trash. Believe what you read |
On the plus side your kids were get a foreign language as part of encore. No other elementary in ACPS offers that. |
Talk to people in real life. This forum attracts anti-Alexandria trolls. |
The school is conditionally accredited, and the principal is terrible. The principal lacks innovation and refuses to be accountable for any of the schools failures (which there are many). Not anti-Alexandria, just facts. |
Those are all expressions of opinion, not facts. Learn the difference. This emphasizes the point that OP should talk to current parents, not an anonymous poster who can't distinguish between opinion and fact. |
Current JH parent here of two kids. Both are thriving and the experience at the school has been similar to those of other ACPS schools. It’s a wonderful community, caring teachers, and a really active and wonderful PTA. Please reach out to the PTA so they can connect you to current parents who actually attend the school. The email is pta.jeffersonhouston@gmail
This forum attracts many who aren’t actually in ACPS or within the school and many times the discussion threads, due to the anonymous nature of the forum, go sideways. It’s impossible to assess the validity of the opinion. Because of that, most ACPS conversations, district and school specific (not just JH but all the schools) have moved away from this forum and to Facebook to the below groups. Additionally, you can follow the school specific Facebook pages as well as PTA pages. https://www.facebook.com/groups/227790538351890/?ref=share&mibextid=S66gvF https://www.facebook.com/groups/alxcity4publiceducation/?ref=share&mibextid=S66gvF |

Here's what we've learned: anyone who likes something that ACPS is an "apologist." Only those who criticize are reliable.
The key point stands. Talk to actual parents, not a bunch of trolls who probably don't even live in Alexandria. |
Get an admin transfer to Brooks. They still hand them out quietly. |
Talk to parents with kids in later grades 3rd and up to get a more realistic view of the school.
They have had a lot of turn over in principals over the last few years. |
Don’t believe a single word anyone in leadership from PTAC says. Do a search on here for threads. |
Right. Don't trust people who use their real names in a publicly available forum. Trust anonymous people who may or may not live in Alexandria, let alone have any actual experience with the school. And whatever you do, don't talk to real life people whose credibility you can actually evaluate. |
