| DC applied to engineering at University Park. Admission was offered…to the Erie campus for the Behrend College. To say DC is disappointed (and embarrassed) to not get into the main campus is an understatement. My wife and I are confused. Is this a usual tactic for Penn State? We didn’t read anywhere that offers to a different campus are an option. |
| Is this a 2+2, meaning they'll go to UP junior year? |
| They offer this instead of waitlisting. |
| I'm sorry. It is unfortunately an extremely common tactic for Penn State to offer admission to one of the other campuses. Your son shouldn't be embarrassed, but certainly fair to be disappointed. |
| That is disappointing, I didn't realize they did that. I hope has some other acceptances to other schools he would be excited to attend. |

From what I can gather, it's a separate campus but that there are 22 campuses and Behrend College specialises in engineering (under grad and post grad).
Your DC got this offer most likely due to the choice of major. Have you visited? It's described as a really nice campus, particularly in the Fall. I think you must be aware of the difference in acceptance rate between UP and B and that's what is troubling you. I would just investigate as much as you can about this specific college because it still could be a really good option for your kid. |
| I don't know anything about the Erie campus. But the campuses I do know are 99% commuters and dead on the weekends, something to keep in mind. |
Not only Penn State many large flagships do this. |
Erie is a lot less like this. |
| Not worth it to pay out of state fees for a Penn State branch campus. If in-state and on a budget, Behrend is an excellent choice. I think it was an independent college at one point, so it has a real campus and isn't just commuters like many of the other branches. |
| Yeah, Penn State does this a lot. Colleges come up with all sorts of ways to not directly reject in hopes to keep them as possible recipients of your college fund dollars. University of Maryland does something similar by offering lots of kids admission....but for the spring semester (starting in January). |
OP here: agree that it isn’t worth the OOS tuition for not not-University Park. Just so disappointing. Thank you, everyone, for the feedback. This is our oldest child, so very new at this college process. |
| You could Switch his major to Division of undergraduate studies" or DUS. And see if that helps to get him an invite to University Park in the fall. Your son could hopefully declare the major he wants sophomore year. |
Yes. Erie is a lot less eerie. |
Based on what I read on CC, this is something a lot of people do, especially those targeting the Business School. |
