Thats really it. My 6year old/almost 7 year old DS has been smelling like poop lately.
Its not an issue with wiping-even when I help him and hes cleaned properly. Its not an issue with clothing-the smell is there even with freshly cleaned clothing Its not underwear-those are changed at least 1-2 times a day. Its not an issue with showering-he has smelled bad even an hour after a shower. I have scrubbed him myself and even added antibacterial soap. I've asked if he is farting but he says he is not (and I believe him). Its like the smell is coming off from his skin. What on earth could this be? Its driving me and DH nuts. |
| If he’s washed with soap and wearing clean clothes the only other possibility is that he has very bad breath. He needs to see a dental hygienist. You might also want to try using baby powder after his shower. |
| Get Wet ones for him to wipe with after going potty. |
| OP here-thanks. He just had his dental cleaning and checkup and no issues at all so dental issues would have not occurred to me. I've never noticed breath itself as an issue, but will be more aggressive about brushing and flossing and see if it improves. |
we keep baby wipes for this purpose by all of the toilets in our house (and he uses them) but I will try Wet Ones as well! |
| Have you spoken to his pedi? |
| Under his nails? |

I don’t understand how you can’t pinpoint the smell. Can you get close and smell different areas to really discern where it’s coming from? Could it be transferred smell from fabric? Does he bathe daily? If you are showering him, switch to baths at least some of the time to really soak and get every part. Some ideas to check for smell:
-Under fingernails or toenails -Tongue or behind teeth -privates or underarms or neck -rewearing clothes -stinky sheets or stuffed animals -stinky winter or sports gear -musty bedding or playroom rug -playing with dog Also try airing out his room and bathroom every morning or at least once a week. |
| For clarity: Immediately after showering, he smells fine? The soap smell is not masking his poop scent? It’s truly gone? Then the smell comes back sometime within the hour? |
|
Does he use deodorant yet? Maybe try that.
Have you tried asking a third party? Is it your house - could it be lingering on him? |
I notice the smell about an hour or so after a shower. To answer a few other PPs: I cant identify a part of his body that the smell is coming from. Its just HIM. No deodorant use yet. We have a ped appointment next month. I dont think its my house. I was with him in a store over the weekend and leaned over to look at something with him and he smelled distinctly of poop. |
| Tonsil stones. I know you said he had a dental appointment recently but they may not have seen or mentioned them. |
| He's scratching his butt. |
| I think a trip to doctor might be in order, and quietly tell dr outside what you are saying here. |
