Sequential electives

Anonymous
Can someone tell me what counts as a sequential elective? I feel so dumb asking. If someone takes intermediate band multiple years in a row, does that count? I’m trying to see how one could use band as sequential if the student doesn’t enroll in marching band.

Can foreign language ever count?

Why is this so confusing?

Yes on the same band 2 years in a row.

My kid was in the top level band all 4 years and the counselor marked that as satisfying the sequential elective.

This is OP - world languages no longer fulfill this, at least as far as I can see (from the presentation at YHS a few weeks ago)

This is such a dumb requirement. The purpose of electives is to try new things.

You have to ask your school. They get to decide what counts.

Not a dumb question at all.

Are you sure about this? You can't double count the same class for both the world language and sequential elective requirements, but I thought language classes taken in excess of the requirements could count as electives.

I think you may have misunderstood . If you go up above the required 2 years, yes they’re sequential.

Totally dumb. As is the requirement to take an online class, plus 2 years of PE, plus personal finance in addition to 4 years of social studies, plus a million other things that weren’t required to graduate 25 years ago.

Hmmm what would you consider reasonable to ask kids to achieve to earn a high school diploma? One year of math? None of the things you listed are outrageous to expect kids to do over the course of 4 years.

We had to take 4 years of PE.

It should be 0.

I agree. As a parent with a rising senior, I've seen the frustration over trying to fit in all the requirements while also creating a schedule that will be competitive for college. Back in my day (sigh), we had a lot of 1 semester classes, so you could try different electives. You could take econ and sociology and marketing. You didn't have to give up an elective spot so that you could take an AP science class. My kid took one summer class so they could get in an elective that was actually interesting. The sequential wasn't a problem for us b/c my kid loved their art class, but had to stop for junior year b/c there just wasn't room anymore.

I’m now stuck on the virtual class requirement. APS says that is fulfilled in economics or AP Econ. Seriously - there’s no in person option to take AP Econ? I didn’t take that in high school but I was an Econ major and that would have been really hard to take online. Is there another way?

I am surprised at the number of requirements (4 years of math is okay - 1 virtual class or sequential ones are both weird requirements). My kid is coming in with 5 high school classes and I’m still a little worried about how to fit it in.

And they should get PE credit for sports or marching band.
