Crime statistics in schools

Where can we find historical crime statistics for MCPS?

Start here with the latest state-level data on suspension and serious incidents by school: https://www.marylandpublicschools.org/about/Documents/DCAA/SSP/20222023Student/2022-2023-MD-PS-Suspensions-By-School-and-Major-Offense-Category-Out-of-School-Suspensions-and-Expulsions.pdf

MCPS safety and security data by school is helpful, but it lags behind the state data. Currently, they only have 2021-2022 data available: https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/sharedaccountability/safetyglance/

Another good way to get a sense of what is happening at schools is to look at the County's dispatch database and filter by type of location - there is a field for school.

What are the stats for the last 20 years? This is information is vital for the performance evaluation of the superintendents.

It's at the discretion of the Principal whether to recommend suspension, so ymmv.

We know that but it does give you a sense of the level of issues and a window into how different schools handle discipline. Gaithersburg High - that's more than 1 suspension each day.

Comparing apples to oranges. It takes A LOT MORE to get suspended today then 10 years and definitely 20 years ago. 20 years ago, suspensions/expulsions were not held against administrators like that data is held against them today. Principals try to avoid suspensions at all costs.

Yes. This. Not entirely their call from my understanding. At least the past couple of years central wouldn’t allow it in many cases. Also, if a student has an IEP, there are legal guidelines to follow as well regarding consequences.

I’m out of the loop. Why the heck does Julia West Middle have 126 incidents! Wow. What is going on there? What high schools do these kids go to?

Which would mean if the numbers are the same or a higher, the problem is getting worse. Are there statistics for the last 5 years? Suspensions is just one item to look at.

You see what the reasons are for police to be dispatched to schools and which schools they go to. Lots of drug and weapon calls. There are a few middle schools that have a higher number of sexual assault/fondling calls than other schools which could either be because they believe victims or more kids are victimized. It's just interesting to see which schools you see over and over again.

Hold on..... If this data is from 2021-2022, that's the year we returned to the building full-time. OH, I BET THOSE NUMBERS ARE OFF. I definitely would be curious to see the numbers from then to now. LOTS of issues in schools that year. LOTS
