Just got an email from my student loan servicer that my college and grad school loans were forgiven. They are in the six figure range. I have been making payments for 20 years and I guess I reached the criteria for them to be forgiven. I did move them from a private services to a govt sponsored one to mange the loans.
In the note is said “Congratulations! The Biden-Harris Administration has forgiven some or all of your federal student loan(s) with ————- in full.” So I am super pleased and appreciate what they have done . But see an obvious campaign push with how it’s written and. It just a plain email saying it’s from the department of education. Anyone else have their loans forgiven? |
| Congrats! What about how you paid before they were forgiven? Not exciting at all if you paid $200k before it happened. |
|
Yes,
I paid down about 150k prior over the past 20 years. But still had a large balance. I had no idea they could be forgiven down the road as that was not on the radar in 2001? The interesting fact is that the original plan by Biden to forgive 10-20k for everyone less struck down by the courts. We would not have qualified for that as it was phased out based on income. This forgiveness, had not phase out to current income. |
But without this loan forgiveness plan they could pay $200K and then still owe $100k so, it's still exciting. |
This language is not different than some of what the previous administration had. But in all seriousness- this was something they campaigned on and was not easy getting through. When you vote - you can think about what you are able to do with your payments that you had tagged for paying student loans for the next X years |
Not worse than Trump who sent out checks to everyone during the pandemic. Even my French cousin, who was born in the States but lived all her life in Europe, got a check! I think she hung it up on her wall

It's odd you don't want to know who or why you got this unprecedented loan forgiveness that doesn't even care if you are going to vote for them. Nobody is flipping a vote because of a loan forgiveness but Biden is killing it.

Congratulations, OP!
(Unless this is a thread designed to make people mad, in which case no thanks OP. But assuming you are real, I'm really happy for you. It took me 21 years to pay off my loans, and I am really happy for anyone who get some relief from that hanging over them.) |
Also, republicans voted against those checks going out. |
| Congrats OP! Isn’t it the best feeling to NOT have that hanging over your head anymore? My loans weren’t forgiven (long story filled with ridiculous technicalities) but I remember sending that last payment and the insane relief I felt. Enjoy it! |
|
Congrats, OP, you won the lottery. While many of us went to community college or less expensive schools where we wouldn't incur 6-figure debt and didn't have taxpayers pay it off for us.
Please be generous now with charities or some other way of paying it back to society. |
| Grad school loans should never be forgiven...absurd honestly... |
I call bullshit on this. It doesn't ring true. |
|
I had my loans forgiven through PSLF and the letter said nothing about Biden-Harris...
Congrats though! It's such a good feeling to not need to make any more payments! |
| Congrats OP. Some blue collar worker's taxes are paying for your student loans so you can enjoy even more money for yourself. |
