Mouse Infestation: Please share experiences

We can’t get rid of them and it’s getting worse. What worked for you? Type of trap? Best bait? I plugged all the holes I could find. I’m desperate!
Afraid of poison because everyone says they will die in the walls and smell. I’d almost prefer that over this. Droppings everywhere.

I use traps and poison.

If you have that many mice, there are already dead ones in your house. They don’t live that long, where did you imagine they went to die? They’re tiny, if they smell it won’t be for long.

I'm dealing with a horrible musky/sickly sweet smell now -- pretty sure there is something dead in my wall. Trust me -- you do not want this. Get on top of it now. Call an exterminator.

OP: That’s a really good point!

Yeah, but they all use poison

I hired an exterminator who uses snap traps. He plugged every hole he could find, set the traps, and then came and checked them weekly and dealt the corpse disposal and trap resetting. We went from Mouseapalooza to occasional mice.

We hired a company to plug all the holes. And they set out poison. Yes, it smells for a couple days. Get yourselves a box fan and light some candles, and you’ll get through it. Solved the problem for us.

+1 to many mouse traps. The black plastic snap traps for places where you don't have kids or pets, and the enclosed DoomBox traps for other places. I have not yet tried the electric "zap" traps.

Also clean up as much of the droppings as you can so that you can see if more appear.

Keep looking for holes. Lots of people repurpose baby monitors for this reason (the kind that record). You will have a mouse-free life ahead of you, but you have to be super diligent about finding all the holes.

I don't know what's worse if they die in the walls or they die elsewhere. Mine all died dramatically and publicly and I was constantly disposing of dead mouse bodies.

There are also traps that deliver electric shock. I have no experience with that but seems more humane than poison which can take a few days.

I got cats.

Plugging the holes is the most important step. You need a pest control person who is experienced with finding holes in a house's foundation, etc.

I killed 2 mice with a bucket and toilet paper roll trap. I also went nuts plugging up all the holes in my apartment.

I got a cat, and after years of mouse issues, he quickly caught them all and there's no sign of any more. How do the mice know?!!!
