Clueless about travel soccer

Anonymous
I have an 11yo born summer 2012.
We’ve been doing rec soccer with OBGC but this might be our last spring.
I don’t want to travel for travel
Soccer if that makes sense. Is that an option. Are there any clubs in moco ideally near Burtonsville that don’t send you all over the place on weekends?
I’m looking for a fun environment where she can learn and improve but doesn’t involve practice 5 times a week. Low key works.
I didn’t grow up here or play sports so I know nothing.

Not all teams travel out of the area for their games and tournaments. Unless your kid is on the top team of the age group there's a good chance all the games are local and tournaments are within 30 minutes. You can also ask the clubs before trying out.

What do you consider "all over the place"? You won't be in North Carolina or Pennsylvania every weekend if that's what you mean. YOu'll travel to various DC suburbs. Here is the OBGC U12G schedule for the fall. You can, I'm sure, call the OBGC office and talk to someone about the club's teams.

If you just want a low key fun experience:

Stay at the club you are currently at and stay off this board.

SAM Select and MSI Classic are "Select" level programs that are more competitive than red, but play all of their games in Montgomery County. Coaches can be volunteers or professional.

In terms of amount travel:

NCSL - least travel, but still includes the VA exurbs and St. Mary's County, MD

EDP - more regional, but games generally in DC, MD, VA, and southern PA

ECNL - most travel

Different clubs play in different leagues (and larger clubs offer teams in at least two of the above).

Rosa (Rockville Olney soccer association) would be a good fit and will raise her level of play.

Thank you everyone. Going to look at all these options. I briefly looked at Rosa but to drive to Rockville in rush hour twice a week isn’t appealing if there is something closer.

So NCSL is least amount of travel?
I looked at the page and don’t know where to go to see the OBGC schedule for this fall. Is it too early?

Way too early for fall schedules, but you can look at all the previous years to get a good idea.

Was going to suggest the same! My daughter is same age and there are two practices per week. Indoor practices are at Sandy Spring Friends school and Rockville sportsplex only until spring season starts (maybe April?) and then practices will revert to outdoors at either Sequoyah Elementary and/or Redland park. Games are usually in MoCo, though a couple of tournaments have been maybe 30-40 min away (those were optional). You can always do a test practice or two before committing. I would say the vibe is more serious that OBGC, but still very healthy and focused towards development and fun above all else.

My son plays in MYS and last fall our team went to these areas: McLean, Leesburg, Falls Church, Arlington, and the farthest was Charles County MD (about 45 minute drive) and that was only once.

Try MSI Classic, OP. Games are all in MoCo and you can join a team based in geography so practices are close to you.

Stay away from travel clubs. Too much driving around even for the most local ones and total money grab/cash cow for most, even on the top teams.

Eye of the beholder. It's a lot of money (think $2,000-3,000 depending on the club), but DD gets a professional coach for 2-3 practices a week and games, 4 tournaments a year, fields, refs, etc. Our coaches have been extremely dedicated to their teams. Only thing I despise is the uniform fees when some rec kids get uniforms that are just as nice.
